Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There was the bonfire for everyone who thought Maryland in January was a little too cool for their taste, as well as the ~~moddable~~ warm food and drinks, and chairs and tables in the school colors of blue and gold. Some tables were also set a little further away from the crowds.

Because there were always people who preferred the fringes.

Omg, Jack! Stop stealing phrases that Karla had rightfully stolen from Jaenelle!

"How'd you end up here, anyway?" she asked. "Won't being here get in the way of your duties?"

"Um, the wind kind of dropped me off at an airport and smacked me with a pamphlet," Jack replied, shrugging his shoulders. "And... 'duties' is a kind of loaded word, isn't it? I make it snow, I put frost on the ground. I can get around pretty quickly, and it isn't like it snows everywhere, every day."

"Can you make it snow in...one of those countries on the other side of the world while you're here?" Karla asked, vaguely gesturing towards where she thought Europe might be. (She was wrong). "Like Russia or Syria or wherever?"

...Karla was not a student of earth geography.

"What, like... remotely?" Jack tilted his head a little at her at that, yes. "No, not really. But winter goes ahead and does its thing without me, when I can't be there, you know. I mean, winter was around long before I ever was."

Winter wasn't around because of Jack. Far more accurately, Jack was around because of winter.

"But you can make winter last longer, right?" Karla asked. The movie had said he could, when he's made the agreement with the lazy gopher or whatever.

...Jack was going to have such trouble getting her to disbelieve in his purple phase.

"Sure, if I want to," Jack ventured, looking curiously at the girl. "You're a fan of winter, are you?"

Who wasn't, right?

... Right?

Karla just had to grin at him. "I'm the Queen of a Territory called Glacia. What do you think?"

She was also dressed as close to the stereotypical winter queen as possible, in shades of deep blue and silver. Because when the Darkness gave you a trope, you lived the Hell out of it, okay?

"I guess that explains that." Yeah, Jack was grinning. "Now's where I admit I've never heard of Glacia, and you get all disappointed and stop believing in me, isn't it?"

Now Karla was just looking at him like he was crazy. "Why should I stop believing in you just because you don't know about Glacia? You belong to this world, not mine. What--am I supposed to stop believing in Santa just because he doesn't visit Kaeleer?"

"You're from a whole different world?" Jack was getting the Fandom Island Crash Course in fits and starts, from the handful of people who could see him. "That's something that happens around here, too?"

Hooboy.

"...The anthropomorphized concept of winter is surprised that we get students across the space-time continuum?"

Karla was confused.

"Across the what?"

Well, there you go, Karla. For a guy who lived in the woods without a roof over his head, Jack Frost was a bit of a shut-in.

"Space-time continuum?" Karla tried again, because maybe saying the same words would help. "All across every dimension and reality ever?"

That should clear everything right up!

"Different realities," Jack echoed, clinging desperately to a phrase in that crazy jumble that seemed to make sense. "I guess that kind of explains how all of a sudden, so many people can see me..."

"Different realities, worlds, and times," Karla said with a nod. "Someone from your world, but two hundred years in the future. Or a world like yours, but with werewolves. Or someone like me from a different world altogether."

"Doesn't that get, I don't know... confusing?"

His experience with dealing with other people was minimal. Keeping track of the worlds they were from or what time or any of that on top of it all seemed like a huge task.

Karla just laughed. "A bit," she admitted. "But moreso for people who are from a 'normal' world than not. For me, it's obvious I'm not in my world. For someone else, it might take more convincing."

"And how do you know which world is the normal one?"

Oh man, was he weird? He was weird, wasn't he?

"The worlds that seem closest to this one get counted as normal," Karla explained. "If you recognize this world and this place and very little seems out of the ordinary, you're from a 'normal world.'"

"Well I've never heard of a Fandom Island before, for what that's worth," Jack noted. "And I'm really not used to so many people just walking up to me and casually starting conversations... So I guess it might be safe to assume that I'm not from one. Maybe? Is that how it works?"

He was bad at this game.

"If you didn't have people talking to you, would you think you were in your own world?" Karla asked patiently. "Does it look and feel familiar to you? The fact that so many people can see you is probably because we're the abnormal ones."

Look, Jack. You were in jeans and a hoodie and were at least a supporting actor in several of this world's films. Karla was betting on 'normal.'

Jack considered that for a moment, and then shrugged, gesturing with his thumb toward the school.

"Well, you definitely don't see castles like that one every day, where I'm from. This place feels... kind of the way the world did a few hundred years ago, more like. No cars, narrow streets... But we did get here on a bus, so I'm not sure."

The island itself was probably not a great reference point for figuring this sort of thing out.

"I guess I'll find out if I stick around."

"Well, you're here for a semester at least," Karla said with a smile. "Welcome to Fandom, Jack."
