Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There was the bonfire for everyone who thought Maryland in January was a little too cool for their taste, as well as the moddable warm food and drinks, and chairs and tables in the school colors of blue and gold. Some tables were also set a little further away from the crowds.

Because there were always people who preferred the fringes.

[OCD up! This is the FIRST post for general mingling. Please use this post first, if your browser can handle the comment load. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here and there's more room for mingling here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Oh," Anna said, sounding almost disappointed. "I didn't know that, no. It's just that I'm dead," she explained. And now they couldn't have a ghost club, Jack.

Maybe once Jack realized that he was kind of dead, too, they could totally revisit the idea of having a ghost club! As it stood, he was sort of wandering the Earth with some hazy and semi-mistaken notion that a frozen lake had spat him out, fully formed, on the Moon's say-so.

Silly boy.

"Oh," Jack replied, biting his lip and then floating down to land on the snow in front of her. "I'm sorry... I didn't know. You're the first ghost I've met, I think."

That wasn't saying much.

"No, it's okay," Anna said, although this was obviously not exactly true, because hi, she was dead. "It's not anything you have to apologize for. I'm kind of used to it, I guess. And I don't think I'm not much like most ghosts. Most of them don't go to high school, for one thing." Oh, right, introductions. Those were a thing that you had to do when you were actually talking to people. "I'm Anna."

"Nice to meet you, Anna," Jack replied, offering her a handshake. Could a spirit shake a ghost's hand? Well, she could see him and could talk to him, so why not? "I'm Jack Frost."

And then he was offering her a 'no, really' sort of smile, to go along with that handshake.

Anna took his hand and shook it politely, never considering that there might be a problem. Her hand would have seemed cool to a human, but to him, well, who knew?

"Well, sure," she said, a little wry. "Why not? It's very nice to meet you, as well. At least I'm not the only one without shoes around here now."

If her hand would seem cool to a human, Jack's would feel freezing. He was the embodiment of winter, after all, and it wasn't as though he had much frame of reference for how other people's hands were supposed to feel. He shook her hand, and it was human contact, and that was awesome.

"Shoes are overrated," he decided, grinning down at her hand before letting go. "As far back as I can remember, I've never had a pair. Why worry about it now?"

Anna didn't really notice temperatures, so she didn't think anything of it. "I have them," she said, "I just never remember to wear them." She frowned down at her feet. "It's just weird." That she was barefoot, that was, because she was sure she was wearing shoes when she died, but that was kind of depressing to tell the new kid. "Just be prepared for a lot of people asking you where your shoes are, and if you're cold."

"I'm pretty sure they'll find out quickly enough whether I'm cold or not." Jack looked down at his own feet, giving his toes a wiggle. "I guess I could put some on. I mean, just because most people can't see or touch me doesn't mean I can't pick things up, or wear them, or anything."

It wasn't like he'd been wearing this blue hoodie three centuries ago, after all.

... The pants hadn't changed, mind.

"You don't have to if you don't want to," Anna assured him. "I don't think there's a dress code here or anything."

"Judging by what everyone else here is wearing, I can't imagine there is one." There was a moment's pause while Jack glanced around the people gathered for the picnic. "Nobody's clothing really matches, does it? I think some people here are ready to re-live the renaissance."

"They probably came from the Renaissance," Anna told him. "We sort of...get all kinds here."

Jack took that statement as an excuse to give the place another glance around, a little more thoughtfully. And then he nodded a bit.

"I guess I was sitting next to a dinosaur while I was waiting for the bus," he allowed. "And really, who am I to get all skeptical about the other people here?"

Well, he reserved the right to be a brat at people who couldn't see him. For reasons.

"I was wondering about that," Anna said. "Is the dinosaur a student? Do you know? And, I mean..." she shrugged. "Most people don't believe in ghosts, either." Of course, whether or not they could see Anna wasn't dependent on whether they believed in her.

"I'm pretty sure the dinosaur is a pet," Jack replied. "Of that purple-haired girl she's wandering around with. I didn't catch either of their names, but I know the dinosaur's a she, for what it's worth."

He hadn't really been able to ask about anything else, after all.
