Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There was the bonfire for everyone who thought Maryland in January was a little too cool for their taste, as well as the moddable warm food and drinks, and chairs and tables in the school colors of blue and gold. Some tables were also set a little further away from the crowds.

Because there were always people who preferred the fringes.

[OCD up! This is the FIRST post for general mingling. Please use this post first, if your browser can handle the comment load. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here and there's more room for mingling here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I'm pretty sure you would've passed with flying colors," Jack mused, staring down at her. "Uh, time-skips?"

His sibling couldn't see him. He had mostly been clinging to whatever he could pick up from the people talking around him.

"Eh, time doesn't always line up right. Like, I went home for a weekend to deal with an, um, family emergency? And they thought I'd only been gone a week instead of the better part of a semester. And now I've missed the last month or so by spending a weekend at home." Minako waved a hand in annoyance. "Some people it runs linear, some people discover they've been gone mere hours. I mean, given the level of WEIRD around here, I shouldn't be shocked, but it's annoying."

"Are you new or something?"

"New here today," Jack confirmed with a little nod, still staring at the girl who was so casually talking up at him, "and... most of what I think I'm going to have to get used to around here isn't quite the same as what I think maybe everyone else is going to have to."

A beat.

"Someone assigned me a sibling, but I don't think he's going to be able to do me much good, here."

What with that little intangibility issue he had.

"What? Why not? He not being nice?" Minako blinked up at him, clearly confused. "I mean, some of the kids? ISSUES. But you can always ask me!"

She took a step back to perform a crisp little bow. "Aino Minako, at your services!"

"He's probably a great guy. I mean, he didn't seem so bad earlier when I found him looking for me?" Jack winced. "And when he looked right through me."

He hesitated for a moment, and then stood on his tree branch, jumped up in the air, and then floated gently down to land barefoot in the snow in front of her.

"Jack Frost, at your service," he replied, "since you're the second person who isn't a myth to see me in about three hundred years."

It had been a big day for Jack.

"Eh?" Minako blinked for a moment, then clapped her hands in delight. "You're one of those magic users! We have lots of them! What a clever name!"

"Ahhhhhhhhh, why do I have to be one of the only normal ones? I want magic!"

"Magic is kind of overrated if it comes with a few centuries of solitude to go with it," Jack pointed out, tilting his head at the girl. "Being able to make ice and frost whenever I want is fun and all, but the whole... immortal winter spirit thing that nobody can see gets old after a while."

Three centuries, Minako. Three. Centuries.

Try being reincarnated, Mr. Jack Frost. But Minako was sticking with her innocent school girl identity.

"Ano, but why can't people see you? I mean, why do you think they can't see you? I see you!"

"You do," Jack allowed, tilting his head at her. "You see me. But most people don't even believe I'm real. And if they think that... well... then it's true enough, at least in their personal view of the world. If people don't believe in me, so far as they're concerned I'm not even there."

It sucked.

"You're here, how can they think you aren't real? I mean, you're here!" Minako, you are not great at understanding things. "If someone is a real person or not has nothing to do in believing in them, right?"

"Well, right," Jack replied, drawling out the words slightly as he tried to wrap his head around the girl standing in front of him. "I'm right here, and I'm real. I know that, and so do you. But people who refuse to believe that... they just can't see me at all."

"But...everyone knows about Jack Frost!" Minako blurted out. "You're in, like, all the stories!"

Sorry, Jack, yes. Minako does, actually, believe almost everything she's told.

"At least a few of them," Jack agreed, smiling a little. "But that's the trouble with stories, you know? Just because someone hears about something doesn't mean they can always accept that it's real."

And yet, here he was! Real! Clearly!
