Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There was the bonfire for everyone who thought Maryland in January was a little too cool for their taste, as well as the ~~moddable~~ warm food and drinks, and chairs and tables in the school colors of blue and gold. Some tables were also set a little further away from the crowds.

Because there were always people who preferred the fringes.

"Hey, does that make you an Old Kid?" The smile came easy, casual posture as she turned to see this girl.

"Just slightly traumatized, but the day is not over. I'm Emily."

"Right about now," Jessica said, checking a watch that she didn't have and that wouldn't help her with this kind of time anyway, because comedy, "I'd say I'm a Less New Kid. In another few months, I'll be a Middle-Aged Kid."

"Sorry for stealing your thunder. If it makes you feel any better someone else will make me less newer soon."

She appreciated the comedy, if only because it was easier to play along that way. "So, Less Newer Mystery Girl, any advice you feel like sharing with a grasshopper?"

"First piece of advice, you can just call me Jessica. It's my name, and it's much shorter than what you called me," Jessica said. "Second, be ready for pretty much anything. And depending on what you've heard and/or seen so far, you may very different definitions of 'anything.'"

"Jessica sounds like a good name then." She didn't need to think much to come up with some things that already made her concept of normality waver.

Shrugging a bit, she coughed a bit as she waved a hand. "There was the girl with the extint species acting at her puppy and that bus driver that just needs to make a better fashion statement than an all black leather outfit, cape included."

"Well, that's just a start. Things are going to get a bit weirder," Jessica said. "Just don't freak out and try to ride the weirdness out and you'll see that it's pretty great here."

Well that sounded just swell.

"Now you just sound like you want to scare me. What have you seen so far?"

Because she really should know, yes.

"A lot. Let's make this simpler. Do you believe in magic?" Jessica asked. "Because within the next few weeks, you'll either believe in it or something similar enough to it that it doesn't matter."

Emily stared at Jessica for a moment, seizing her words. "Oh, wow, you're actually serious."

Takeda had said she would be tested about her beliefs as well as her skills, but she didn't think he would be talking about magic of all things. "Let's say I believe you. How ridiculous is this magic?"

"Pretty ridiculous. One of the teachers is a talking pink pony," Jessica said. "So my advice is be skeptical about things you hear, but don't discount anything."

Now she was going to outright stare at her for a moment. "And you're what, an alien? Don't tell me there are aliens in here too; suddenly I feel incredibly average."

Maybe she was being just a bit modest, there.

"Don't be silly, I'm not an alien. My roommate's from space, though," Jessica said. "And I wouldn't feel average if I were you. I'd go with 'normal.' Normal is helpful here."

Emily gave her a knowing smile, if only a bit mischievous.

"Nobody is normal once you know them well."

"I have a pretty wide-ranging definition of 'normal,' admittedly," Jessica said. "But why do you say that? Do you have some crazy superpowers you're going to break out at some point? You can fly, can't you? You can tell me."

She would wait and see just how wide was that range. "No flying. Or crazy superpowers whatsoever. Just 100% human female." She had a dramatic past though. And her parents were deaaaaaad ~~that she knew of~~. Maybe she could be Batman someday.

"You? Anything you want to share before the unavoidable dramatic reveal? Chances are I won't judge."

"Not really, no," Jessica said. "Mostly, I'm just a science nerd. So unless you need tutoring in some kind of random science class, I'm not the best person for that kind of stuff."

The clone-superhero-spy was a goddamn liar.

"Ah, good. I feel like I might need to default to normal people if things get too interesting." Because they both were totally average right?

"Not so sure about random science, but I'm always interesting in learning new things. It could be useful."

"Well, you'll definitely learn all kinds of things around here. It's hard not to," Jessica said.

"Sounds like a survive-or-die kind of setting. Kind of, I hope." But she liked those, and it kinda showed a bit.

"Been here long?" Oddly enough she should've probably asked that one first.

"Just a semester," Jessica said. "And I wouldn't say 'survive or die.' Maybe 'survive or cry because you woke up extremely dramatic in an unnatural way.'"

"Less New, right." So people came in each semester, most likely.

"I'm not sure I understand what could that entail...but I'm sure as hell I don't want to find out." Where the hell had she been shipped off to?

"So, um," Emily suddenly lost most of her chatty facade for a moment there. "It's been nice meeting you? I thought it would be harder, considering I'm pretty new and normal, but it's nice knowing people can be...nice, you know. It means a lot to me."

She even managed to be more or less honest.

"It's no problem. This place is filled with nice people," Jessica said. "Good luck with the rest of the picnic, Emily. And try not to get too weirded out."
