So maybe the sign had skipped a couple of numbers from the last time, if anyone happened to remember or notice that. Someone might be extremely cranky about last week. Or broody. Maybe a little flustered, or all of the above. Luckily she also didn't have a face, so it was fairly easy to hide that -- with disturbing levels of (false) cheer, because that wasn't obvious at all.

Today's test chamber looked really simple: just a massive square room made entirely of portal-able panels. There were a few angled panels sticking out from the walls in places, one floor-to ceiling column, and a few high ledges -- if you looked carefully enough, you'd realize there were a couple of Aperture Science Weighted Companion Cubes up there.

"According to these test results, most of you did a passable enough job handling unexpected test circumstances last week. For that, you get a little bit of a reward. No, no, no need to thank me. If any of you are afraid of heights and you haven't gotten over it yet, now would be a good time," GLaDOS said brightly. Yes, in an almost perky voice. "Today's test is fairly simple: figure out as many practical transportation applications for these Aperture Science Excursion Funnels as you can come up with. If you figure out how to get to the Companion Cubes up there, you can even keep them for the duration of class! Provided one of your classmates doesn't devise a way to take it from you, that is. Possibly violently." She paused. "Have fun with that. And no, you can't take the Companion Cubes with you when you're done for the day."

Look. At least she wasn't going to force you to incinerate them, but if you tried to take out out through the Material Emancipation Grill, well, you brought that on yourself.

"Well, yeah," Chris said slowly. HE WAS VERY PUZZLED BY THIS REACTION, ACE. "What's the matter? A girl as pretty as you shouldn't be lookin' so distressed."

"Oh. This is a thing, innit."

"'Scuse me?" So yes.

"Say, are you really from England? That's ace." No, she was.

"That's my name." No, it wasn't. Not really. "The real question is where d'you think you're from, today? Or when."

"Why, 1955, of course," Christopher said easily. "So's everyone. Why don't you know that? Did you hit your head? I knew this class wasn't safe."

Well, the greyscale made sense now. A weird, Fandom kind of sense.

"Pff, safe's no fun," Ace replied, exactly as she would've if he'd been in colour and from 25 years after her instead of 30 before. "Anyway, how do you know you didn't hit your head?"

It was as good an explanation as I just woke up six... had been.

"Because I'm an athlete, doll," Christopher told her ~~condescendingly~~ fondly. "I don't get hurt by mistake unless I'm skidding into home plate, and then I've got my helmet on."

He would pardon that choking laugh like she had a couple of elephants stuck in her throat, wouldn't he? "You've got a helmet. That explains so much."

By which she meant the fact that he wasn't wearing it now, after clearly hitting his head, explained his use of the word 'athlete.'

Hey, hey, all high school baseball players wore helmets! Because safety! This wasn't rugby, Ace. Or Beacon Hills lacrosse.

"I don't think I dig," Christopher said, with a little head-tilt of bewilderment. WHY WERE YOU SO CONFUSING, ACE?

LIKE SHE WAS ANY BETTER WHEN HE WAS NORMAL?

"S'alright. We'll laugh about it together when you get your brain back." For now, she would just laugh about it alone.

"Whatever you say, doll," Chris replied, then offered her a wink. "Never gonna pass up a chance to talk to a chick as fly as you."
