Paleontology, Feb 13th, 7th Period

"Okay, today, we're going to practice digging fossils out of rock. Don't worry if you've never done it before- and I suspect that probably none of you have- we'll be doing this exercise at least once more, so I can see your progress. Everyone choose a rock and get to work!"

On the table at the front of the classroom are seven rocks of various sizes, plus hammers, chisels, and brushes.

"And don't forget to hand in your homework as you leave. No presentations today, because let's face it, the assignment was sort of boring."

[ooc: comment in the Discussion thread with whether you took a large, small, medium-sized, whatever, rock, and then whether you managed to free your fossil with no problems, or possibly chipped or broke it.]

Rory took a small rock and began to meticulously poke at it with her chisel, pausing occasionally to brush at it.

Eventually, she freed what she was pretty sure was a fossil, only chipping it very slightly on one edge.

Perfectionist.

Molly took a large rock and cracked it in half the first time she hit it with the hammer.

"Oops."

Janet took a medium rock and worked at it carefully until she freed the fossil. Which she didn't chip. Showoff.

After selecting a larger rock and chipping bits off, Sharon glanced over at Janet's perfection. And huffed before throwing a handful of chips at her fellow student.

Whether her aim was on or not was entirely up to the chips.

Meanwhile, the fossil began to emerge.

Janet snickered at Sharon and tossed a couple of chips of rock back at her. "I've been working on very small sections of the fossil at time," she said. "And being careful to brush off the rock every minute or two." And the player is totally pulling this out of her ass based on the fossil lab exhibit at the Field.

Janet peered at Sharon's fossil. "What do you think you have there?"

"I think it's a fish." Sharon made a face. Fish were a bit too fishy for her. Absently, she brushed a chip off her cheek before continuing to methodically uncover the fossil.

"I suppose we'll find out at the end of class," she said. "Are you looking forward to the field trip?"
