Library, Halloween, All Day

After leaving class, Sholeh headed for her shift at the library. She was unsurprised to see that the books had already gotten into the holiday spirit: the origami books were hard at work making spooky paper decorations, there were multiple books flapping about like bats or floating through the air like ghosts, and the children's books were wandering around the other sections in groups, escorted by books from the maternity section.

Rather than try to get them all back where they belonged, Sholeh decided to indulge them in their festivities and read her book, The All Hallow Eve's Arbor. It was both entertaining and educational!

Unsurprisingly, there was Ulrik. And food. Adorable Halloween-themed cupcakes, in this particular instance.

"I'm given to understand sweets are an important part of today's celebrations," he explained, setting them down on the counter. "So, naturally, I thought I ought to share some with you."

Fortunately, Ulrik arrived right as Sholeh had finished a chapter, so she wasn't forced to choose between his company and stopping in the middle of a page or something.

"They are!" she said, giving him a bright smile as she set down her book. "And dressing up in weird costumes to earn more. You'll still share the cupcakes with me even though I'm dressed normally?"

Well, normally for her.

"I don't know..." Ulrik drawled dramatically. "Perhaps I should find someone in a costume to give these to, now that you mention it."

He would do no such thing.

"You would do that to me?" Sholeh asked, not believing that for a moment. Still, she was giving him her best little-sister-sad-eyes. "Leaving me to cry all alone in the library?"

He really was kind of a sucker for sad eyes. Still. Fighting to keep himself from smiling, he nodded. "Yes. We're in America, we should abide by their rules, don't you think?"

Now there were sniffles, Ulrik. Sniffles.

"But I'm neeeeew," she said, lower lip trembling dangerously. "I didn't know! Why are you punishing me for my ignorance?"

"As am I," Ulrik pointed out. "I only knew because Stiles told me about the holiday," he admitted.

"Pajama club mentioned it," Sholeh admitted. "Which is why I borrowed this from the library." She held up her book and grinned. "It's really interesting! I guess this holiday is celebrated in lots of different ways around the world and has existed for centuries!"

"Denmark has a similar holiday, when it comes to the dressing in costumes and receiving sweets," Ulrik said with a nod. "Although celebrated at a different point of the year. And I never truly got to participate," he added with a shrug. He couldn't reasonably call his childhood deprived, but he'd certainly... missed out on many experiences that were supposed to be common for children.

"We don't have any like that at all," Sholeh said. "But it sounds like fun! I'm sorry you never had a chance to enjoy it. Will you go out tonight then?"

"Do you think there's still time to find a costume?" he mused.

"There are lots of books in the library all about putting together last minute costumes," Sholeh said, thrilled beyond all measure to be able to help Ulrik with something. "I'm sure we could find something in one that would suit you!"

"Oh, don't for a minute think I'll be going out there alone," Ulrik said teasingly. "If I'm to experience the holiday, you should as well."

If Ulrik thought that would make her balk, he was in for a surprise. Because rather than sputtering up an excuse or two, Sholeh grinned up at him and clapped her hands. "Oooh, can I?" she asked. "That sounds like such fun! And there's the haunted theater in town that sounds deliciously scary and I know a lot of stores will be open giving out candy, too!"

Watch out for any books about pranks and practical jokes!
