Model United Nations, Wednesday, period 1

"Hi everypony!" Pinkie greeted at the top of the class. "I hope you all had fun weekends, especially if you were itty bitty teeny baby fillies and colts! Or whatever you call teeny weeny baby humans. I thought that would make a great topic for our discussion today: what sorts of elements do you think are required for baby people to grow up into effective and successful adult people? Do they need sunshine and smiles? Or just a roof over their head and food? How much should the international community dictate child-rearing policy to other nations? Do you think it's fair for a body like the United Nations to make those decisions for the whole community?"

Somepony had been doing research. Apparently, her weekend reversion to a joyless, smileless state had had more of an effect on Pinkie than she cared to admit.

"But you can legislate those things," Karla argued. "You can make clear laws about what children need and how they should be treated and threaten to remove children from households where those needs are not adequately met. It's hard to enforce, but not legislate."

"But the legislation doesn't do any good if you can't enforce it, so what's the point?"

"And maybe kids in the State of Confusion need something different than baby ponies and how do you make a law that fits both?" Yes, that was an attempt to bring things back to happy fun Pony Class time. Just not a very good one.

"Hard to enforce, but not impossible," Karla pointed out. "And with legislation, when you see something truly egregious, you can take action to get those kids out of there. Without legislation, what recourse do you have?"

Good or not, Karla was willing to turn the topic back around. "Maybe a law that says all children must have their basic needs met?" she suggested. "Even if children from Confusion and baby ponies need different things, it's up to their guardians to see that they get it."

"I can live with that," Richie allowed. "Although if we're gonna be all idealistic then the baby ponies and the kids should get a little more out of it than basic needs. Or we define basic needs as something a little more awesome."

In a class not led by a bright pink pony, Karla might have argued with that. But since this was all about idealism anyway, she felt Richie's suggestion had real merit.

"Like little kids should get to eat dessert every night, even if they don't eat gross things like turnips. And they should be allowed to have at least one snuggly pet. Or a pony."

Oooh. Was that not okay to say in a class taught by a pony? Dammit!

"As long as the pony's okay with it," Richie said. "Sure. Although that's probably not a problem with the ones that come in boring colors." Or was it?

Who knew? Maybe that could be next week's discussion topic.

"Landen animals," Karla agreed, then clarified. "Ones that can't talk back. Uhh, ones that can't talk because they lack sapience, not just because they have some vocal issue..."

And they'd just given more thought and detail about what kind of ponies made acceptable pets than they had about what kind of legislation was necessary for kids. GOLD STAR.

Karla, that is exactly the sort of thing that makes Pony Class the best class.

"Okay, so basic needs, plus dessert and a pet of their choosing as long as the pet isn't actually considered a person. Sound good?"

"I think we can present our findings to the board, yes," Karla said with a slight huff of a laugh. "Go team us!"
