Ethics [Tuesday September 25, 2012, 1st period]

Anakin went to the board after the students arrived and wrote out: "Utilitarianism: it is the greatest happiness of the greatest number that is the measure of right and wrong," then turned to face his students. "Do you think this is true? If what gives the majority pleasure is watching Christians--or Jedi--" he added with a little look directed Atton-ward, "getting eaten by large predators, or a four-day-marathon of that show about the orange people who live in New Jersey, does that make it right? What will protect the rights of the individual in a society ruled by utilitarianism--who in this example might be a Christian who enjoys having brain cells--or do the rights of the minority really matter?"

He leaned back against his desk. "This weekend is also Parents Weekend. As a secondary discussion, let's talk about the ethics of not telling people visiting everything about this island."

Korra rubbed the back of her neck awkwardly. "Well, I was taught that people needed to be protected regardless of how many of them there are, that that's one of the reasons why we have an Avatar."

Not that she'd really done such a great job there, considering.

Anakin nodded. "The Jedi feel the same way."

Shhhh, Atton.

"Hell yes, they matter," Jim said immediately. "Just because what you think isn't in line with what everyone else thinks doesn't mean you should turn into a simpering wuss. Speak up and maybe you'll change minds."

"Maybe you'll end up in jail," Anakin replied. "Does that change anything?"

"I disagree," Bucky answered politely. "It is the greatest happiness of ME that is the measure of right and wrong. And I happen to think that watching humans get eaten would be AWESOME."

Soooo...do you explain "rain of puppies" to your guardians? Or just call it "rain"?

"I've been telling my sister most of the strange things that have happened here so far?" Alec offered. "But not everyone is able to count on their family understanding that sort of thing, so I'm lucky, I guess."

"She doesn't think it's odd?" Anakin asked.

"She does," Alec admitted. "But she's also used to 'odd,' and it's not like she's going to assume I'm lying."

Chaz was about to answer that there was a perk to no one visiting for him, then he wondered if someone from Las Vegas might check in on him anyway. Then his brain short-cicruited. "Not telling them a thing sounds good." He managed.

"They wouldn't understand rain of puppies?" Anakin guessed.

"I'd explain it just to watch whoever might show up for me -- " Which was most likely going to be no one. " -- freak out. It'd be fun."

"So it's not a 'I shouldn't tell a lie' thing for you?" Anakin replied.

Bucky glared at everybody. "I tell you this much: anybody who doesn't tell their guests that cats can talk is up for a WORLD of hurt!"

Korra was there and feeling ambivalent about this whole Parent's Weekend.

Who might accept bribes to say nice things about you to your parents.

Because he's the best ethics teacher ever.

Sigh.
