Club Fair, Gym, Friday Afternoon

Jackson got to the gym early. He took his mission of establishing a sports team in Fandom pretty seriously, see. That involved making something of an effort, and showing up early to check out the competition (yes, he viewed the other clubs as competition, deal with it) was the least he could do.

He grabbed a copy of the club schedule for himself before he went to set up his table.

Okay, two clubs to help run this semester meant two tables to split his attention between. But Evan was going to give it his best attempt!

He'd be running back and forth between this table and the science club one, looking slightly flaily, every few minutes or so. Club fair! Things to do!

The excitement might very well be the end of him, at this rate.

"Magneto?!"

There were some people who didn't think this was a good idea. Not the club itself, but its advisors.

"There wasn't...anyone else available?" she asked Evan. "Anyone? At all? Did you check with Fosse, the janitorial troll?"

"Ummm..." Congratulations, Karla. You'd managed to utterly baffle Evan, who was shrinking back a little bit. "What's wrong with Magneto?"

He needed this reminder!

Oh, Evan. Dear, sweet, gentle Evan. Karla was just going to...bury her face in her palm and shake her head for a moment. "Have you had a chance to talk to Kitty?" she asked, voice slightly muffled. She wasn't going to suggest Jono to him. "Like he suggested?"

"... No," Evan admitted, fidgeting a little. "I thought he'd suggested it for people who don't already know who he is. He's one of the X-Men!"

A good guy!

And now Karla's hand was smacking her forehead. "I assure you," she said tightly. "His past is a long and checkered one, with a lot of stuff he did before he--somehow--became an X-Men. Before he put on those damn tights, he was one of their fiercest enemies!"

Could she maybe get Bobby over to the island, stat? Have him explain a few pertinent facts to the poor kid before he hero-worshipped himself into an early grave.

"Was," Evan said, more than a little meekly. "He was. But he isn't, now. People can change."

He was going to stand fiercely by that one, a little resolve sneaking into his voice at the end of that statement, his shoulders squaring. It would probably be cute, if not for the 'standing up for the honor of a terrorist' thing.

"He wouldn't be teaching here if he hadn't, would he?"

"You are aware that Deadpool is our Vice-Principal, right?" Karla asked dryly.

That was not meant to be reassuring to you, Evan.

"And Deadpool and my Uncle Cluster are friends," Evan replied, still not seeing Karla's point.

It... was a very loose definition of 'friends.'

...That argument would become rather ironic in time, wouldn't it?

"Deadpool isn't entirely sane." And yet was on the administration of the school! Karla's point? FANDOM SOMETIMES HAD REALLY ~~awesome~~ LOW STANDARDS.

Oh, irony wasn't even the start of it.

"... And that makes him a bad person?"

Yeah, Evan still wasn't seeing Karla's point. His best friend at his last school had a habit of peeling off all of his clothes and flying around naked. Sanity need not apply.

"No, Evan," Karla said with a sigh. Deadpool's insanity didn't make him a bad person. It was his everything else that did that. "It's just an example of how Fandom doesn't always apply the most stringent of standards to their hiring policies."

While Evan was running around, Billy was staying put (well, when he wasn't looking at all the other clubs) and looking very excited. He just hoped other people thought this was as good of an idea as he and Evan did.

Some people were unsure. "Magneto?" Alex asked. "I mean, I know I can't really talk considering my dad makes bad choices and all, but, Magneto?"

"Finally," Karla muttered, overhearing. "Someone who understands."

"I know he's a slightly strange choice." Way to understate there, Billy. "But he agrees that the students here should be learning how to use our abilities, and we needed an adult to be able to get into the Danger Shop. It's going to be awesome, I swear."

Slightly strange. Yeah. "Did he say 'students' or 'mutants'?" Alex asked. "Because those sound kinda alike."

"Okay, he said mutants, but the club is for everyone. Evan and I want it to be for everyone, because there are too many powerful people around to just cut them out," Billy said.

"Is he gonna withdraw his sponsorship when he finds out you let nonmutants in?" Alex asked. "Would the club have to fold then? And, like, if his endgame is to take over the island and turn it into a new mutant paradise or whatever, and you've set it up so he can see what all the people he's gonna have to fight to do that can do up close and personal in advance, and, like, which ones he can recruit to his mutant army, what's your plan for dealing with that?" He just sounded genuinely curious, not judging. Although he really hoped you had a plan, Billy.

"He won't withdraw his sponsorship as long as I'm involved," Billy said firmly, because that was just about the only thing of which he was certain. "And if he did, I'm sure we could find someone else to help us, like Mr. Starsmore, and he likes...well, he doesn't like everyone, but he's accepting. As for a potential endgame, I'm working under the assumption that he's not planning something sinister, because I don't think they'd let him work at the school if he was, and if he is, then he's gonna be recruiting whether he sees us all in action or not. But he won't, I'm sure." He had enough optimism for everyone.

Okay, now Alex looked like he was judging you, Billy. "You do know this school employed Deadpool? And, like, you remember what the board was like when they showed up? And you're banking on 'they wouldn't hire him if he was planning something?' Dude. I don't think they're that picky."

"Yeah, I remember the board," Billy said with a hint of bitterness. "Maybe they're not that picky, but Magneto hasn't done anything awful so far, right? He's not a completely terrible person, and he has reasons for being the way he is." Maybe not good ones, but shhh, details.

"...you do mean, like, 'on the island,' right?" Alex had to check. It seemed kind of weird to him, just writing off all the awful stuff someone had done before, but again, with his dad he didn't have that much room to talk.

He also kind of wanted to ask if Billy would be saying the same thing if Norman Osborn showed up, but combined with the way people lined up to be friends with Loki, he wasn't sure he wanted to know the answer.

"Yeah, I meant on the island. I know he's not a great guy," Billy admitted quietly. Why couldn't he be related to completely honorable people? "I was kind of hoping no one would be discouraged from joining if he was involved."
