Combat- Tuesday- 2nd period- Class #3

The class was in the Danger Shop today, even if it looked just like the gym, and Jaina was standing with two similar objects in her hands. "We're going to get back to hand to hand," she promised, "but today we're going to do something a little different.

"This is a lightsaber," she said, igniting the violet blade of the real weapon in her right hand and holding it up as she spoke. "For those of you who don't know, it's a weapon used by the Jedi... and others." The Sith didn't deserve mentioning, and she didn't know about the Imperial Knights, so there. "For those of you who know how to use swords, even light ones, you're going to be in for a surprise here. They're a lot lighter than what you're used to, which is going to change how you fight with it. The beam is plasma, and it's capable of doing this." With that, Jaina plunged her lightsaber downward, cutting easily through the Danger Shop floor before she switched it off. "If it can do that to a floor, it'll do a lot more damage to a person. Which is why you'll be skipping the real thing and using these."

And on went the practice lightsaber in her left hand, which looked and sounded just a little different. The snap-hiss wasn't quite the same. "These are practice sabers. You'll each get one for class. They're good substitutes for the real thing, but if you hit someone, instead of chopping off an arm, you'll shock them." And because she never expected people she bossed around to do anything she wouldn't, she tapped her other arm with the practice blade, and if it looked like it hurt, it's because it did. "Go ahead and pair up, try these out, and don't aim for any sensitive areas on purpose, okay? Seriously."

Alec was looking very mystified by his lightsaber as he approached Korra. Something about using a laser-powered blade.

"Do you want to partner up?"

"Sure," Korra said, thumbing her own laser-sword on. "Hey, mine's blue."

That could only bode well.

"Mine is..." Alec took an embarrassingly long time to find the 'on' button. "Green. Okay." He kind of liked the teacher's purple one, truth be told, but he'd deal. "Oh, and I'm Alec."

It just seemed polite, exchanging names before you jabbed a laser at someone.

"Korra," she said, grinning. This was going to be fun...and possibly painful, but that was what the padding was for.

Alright then. Alec took a step or two back, dropped into a loose fighting stance, and checked, "Ready?"

Come on, like he was going to start without making sure she was prepared.
failsatspirit: (Airbending katas)

"You bet." What Alec mightn't have known was that was pretty much Korra's default reply to any kind of challenge, regardless of how prepared she actually was.
nottrivial: (conv: if you just think about it though)

...True. Alec might have benefitted from that piece of information.

But for now, he was just going to be starting off with a slow and obviously-telegraphed attack to one of her shoulders, figuring it was probably best to start slow in case he turned out to be more advanced at this than she was. Which he was already assuming, somewhat unfairly, that he was. Shadowhunters and their egos.

Well, sure if they were talking about using swords he probably was, but bending was a completely different story...or had been.

As it was, she at least knew more than enough to see and block an attack that telegraphed. "Well don't go easy on me or anything."

"Sorry," Alec said, sounding genuinely apologetic. "It's just hard not knowing your skill level; normally I only ever practice with people I'm used to."

The whole time he spoke, he left himself wide open for counterattacks. Oh, Alec.
failsatspirit: (Ready for anything)

"Only one way for you to find out." It was a good thing for him that subtle didn't really come naturally to Korra, especially when attacking, so he likely had some warning as she aimed a swipe at his midsection.
nottrivial: (neu: totes neu)

Re: Sparring

[personal profile] nottrivial 2012-09-11 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
He did, yes, hence the quick step backwards and smooth parry as he brought his lightsaber around to block the strike. He had to admit that did look pretty cool; he could start to understand why people used these.

Once his weapon touched hers, Alec tried using his strength to sweep both of their blades around in an arc over both their heads, which, if it worked, would leave him free to attack her side.
failsatspirit: (Gonna kick yo ass)

Re: Sparring

[personal profile] failsatspirit 2012-09-11 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Korra might have lacked subtle, but strength she had plenty of, so she planted her feet firmly and pushed right back, keeping her blade between them.
nottrivial: (neu: determined)

Alec frowned. Well. Okay, then.

"You're strong," he said a little breathlessly, as he tried to figure out another opportunity he could take here.

Re: Sparring

"A little, yeah." More like a lot, but her teachers had always been more focused on her bending, so she didn't really consider it anything out the of ordinary that often.

That her relative lack of experience fighting with weapons and without her bending meant she did have to consider her next move instead of just doing it probably wasn't going to work out that well for her...
nottrivial: (pos: i can live with this)

Re: Sparring

[personal profile] nottrivial 2012-09-11 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so pushing her blade wasn't going to work out. Instead, Alec tried simply taking a step back so that he could straighten his arm all the way, turning what had previously been a defensive position into an offensive move toward her stomach.
failsatspirit: (This is the WORST ! THING! EVER!)

Re: Sparring

[personal profile] failsatspirit 2012-09-11 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Korra still wasn't quite in right headspace to anticipate that early enough to respond as quickly as she should have, and in the absence of Alec pushing against her stumbled forward and into the path of his sword.

The only thing saving her from a nasty shock (or becoming a bisected Korra if this had been fore real) was all the hours Tenzin had made her spend going through the Airbending gates. Alec might have heard her furiously muttering "Betheleafbetheleafbetheleaf..." as she pushed herself up and over, twisting out of the path of the blade.

Of course, she managed to drop her laser-sword in the process, the blade turning off and the the handle skittering away from her.
nottrivial: (conv: not sure how to put this)

Re: Sparring

[personal profile] nottrivial 2012-09-11 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he heard the muttering, but Alec was a bit distracted with immediately shutting off his lightsaber and crouching down to get hers. "Sorry," he said a bit sheepishly as he reached over to hand it to her. "There you go."
failsatspirit: (Well this is awkward)

Re: Sparring

[personal profile] failsatspirit 2012-09-12 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
"Thanks," Korra said, equally sheepishly as she took it back. "Guess I'm better with my bending than weapons."
