Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Although the summer had been record-breakingly hot, the weather outside today was actually kind of pleasant. There was a cool breeze blowing across the lawn, making the smells of the buffet wander, and hopefully enticing people to come over to the school and welcome all the new folks.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out as usual, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"The Jedi Temple," Karla said, brow furrowed. When she'd been there, it'd been a huge and imposing edifice, where all the Jedi had gone for training and whatall. Perhaps she'd been a little biased by the company she'd kept, but she'd been under the impression it was kind of the heart of the planet. Certainly the heart of the Order. "...Please tell me who know what Jedi are?"

"Your information's a little out of date, pateesa," Cade said. "The Jedi are long gone. The only Temple on Coruscant now is one for the Sith."

And that would be a jaw drop out of Karla, yes.

"It's what?!" she screeched. "Sith?! In the Temple. Hell's Fire, Mother Night, and may the Darkness have mercy!"

Anakin was going to freak. And Ben--

Right. Ben wasn't going to know. Because he was on a ship and away from communication for the next fifty years.

"Have you ever heard of Luke Skywalker?" she asked. Maybe this was before Luke did all his...saving of the Jedi? Yeah, that was probably it. This was before Luke.

Ahh, Luke. The reason Cade used drugs.

"Yeah," he said shortly. "He's long gone too."

Luke was a pain in the ass like that, yeah.

"Long gone?" Karla said, faltering. "I--oh. I don't suppose you have any idea what happened to his son? Ben Skywalker? Does anyone talk about him?"

"That's about a hundred years before me, pateesa," Cade said, sounding almost apologetic.

"Ohhh," Karla said, looking relieved. "That still doesn't answer what the Hell happened to the Temple, but..."

She could try to find out more later. This was Cade's welcoming picnic, not his 'get interrogated by his big sibling' picnic.

"Sorry. Ben just graduated and was one of my best friends. I worry." She offered him a smile. "Hi, welcome to Fandom, timelines are fuzzy, I'll explain more, and what does 'pateesa' mean?"

"Pateesa's pretty much sweetheart," Cade said. "It's Huttese."

"Funny," Karla said, one side of her mouth twitching. "All the Huttese I know is along completely different lines."

And then she shared one of the filthier phrases she'd learned from being within earshot of an angry Anakin Skywalker, her expression not changing in the slightest.

"Nice one, even if your grammar is about two hundred years out of date," Cade replied, grinning.

"In that case, it's your younger siblingly duty to teach me how it's changed over the past two hundred years," Karla informed him, tucking that date away in case it was necessary later. Using her haughtiest aristo accent, she added, "After all, it would never do to be seen using anything but the most up-to-date of grievous insults and gutter language."

"In that case, repeat after me," Cade replied. "U kulle rah doe kankee kung."

"U kulle rah doe kankee kung," Karla repeated, managing to not mangle the words too badly. And then tried a few more times until she thought she'd gotten pretty close to Cade's pronunciation. "U kulle rah doe kankee kung. What does that mean?"

He grinned. "You're my kind of scum."

Best little sibling ever.

"I'll have to keep that one in mind," Karla said with a laugh. "Don't be surprised if I show up at your door demanding to know more sometimes."

Collecting nasty phrases was kind of a hobby of hers.

"Though I suppose we should get around to all that stuff that I'm supposed to be teaching you, huh?"

"I'm pretty good at landing on my feet," Cade assured her.

"That doesn't mean it hurts to have someone easing out that landing anyway," Karla pointed out. "Besides, there's a basket of presents right here. Do you really want to turn them all down?"

She reached into her basket and opened up a box of cupcakes from J,Gob. Sure, the picnic was full of stuff to eat, but this was all for him. And not baked by Karla, which he didn't realize was a benefit all its own.

And perhaps better than the cupcakes, at least from Cade's point of view, were the tiny nip bottles of rum that Karla had to move to get to those cupcakes.

"I like free things," Cade said, looking at the bottles.

Karla handed the basket over to him with a smile. There was also a sports bra in there, an industrial-strength umbrella, a cell phone, and a few other ~~moddable~~ items that Karla had thought would be helpful. "Shall I explain why certain things are in there?" she asked. "Or let you figure it out?"

Cade reached for the bra. "For when some poor girl forgets her shirt before getting to my place, there's an extra?"

Cade, that's not a shirt.

Karla arched an eyebrow. "Happens to you a lot?" she asked. Look, her new little sibling was hot. Hands-off, but hot. "But no. That's a bra. For you." She smiled at him again. "For when you turn into a female."

"You're karking with me," Cade replied.

Karla didn't need a translation for that one. "You should be so lucky. It happens. And so do rains of bizarre items, like chocolate syrup and popsicles, random animal transformations--you turn back naked, so be careful, and there are little green monsters called gremlins that will try to bite you. Their venom is a hallucinogen, and you'll end up doing utterly stupid things and people will be there to laugh and take pictures."

You were a Skywalker, Cade. Gremlin bites were inevitable. They'd know.

Cade blinked at her. "Right," he said. "Who do you get your drugs from?"

Because seriously, he'd like some.

Karla just gave him a wide grin. "You'll find out the truth soon enough. And when you do, I won't even say 'I told you so.'"

Out loud.

...Very loudly, anyway.

"Care to make a bet?"
