Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Although the summer had been record-breakingly hot, the weather outside today was actually kind of pleasant. There was a cool breeze blowing across the lawn, making the smells of the buffet wander, and hopefully enticing people to come over to the school and welcome all the new folks.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out as usual, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I know what a gremlin is," Yeul said, looking baffled. "But your description doesn't match what I know. Gremlin's aren't green, they're grey, white, and yellow. They're a type of Spook. They don't work in offices."

"Spook sounds right, at least," Ace offered. "Here they're little monsters that run 'round this island and bite people. Dunno how they got Bob to work in the office; I think he's some kind of gremlin genius or something."

"That is the most unusual thing I have heard since coming here," Yeul shared. "I'm not sure what to make of it."

"...Oh, Christmas." That wasn't a sanitized curse; Ace had just decided that was her new little sibling's nickname, which wouldn't make any more sense to somebody from a world with Spooks and silver hair than any other word out of her mouth in the last five minutes. "If that's the weirdest you've heard about this place..." Ace paused, then settled on, "...at least you won't get bored anytime soon."

Where to start? "You had anything to eat yet?" she asked, gesturing toward the buffet tables. "Fandom Island, lesson one: if it's free, take it. It's usually good, unless it turns you into a frog."

"Does food sometimes turn you into a frog?" she checked before making any move towards it. "Should I be careful of that?"

How had Caius thought she'd be safe here?

"I knew some things before coming," Yeul added, just so her sibling didn't think she wasn't paying attention. "About different worlds and there being a castle here."

"More than I knew," Ace answered, a bit impressed. "I dunno if it's really the food; prob'ly not. Just sometimes people turn into things. There was one weekend when most of us were ponies. Not bad, that, except for opening doors and such."

"What are ponies?" she asked apologetically. "I'm sorry, I gathered they're some sort of creature but..."

Yeul needed to find a library. Clearly.

Errrrp. Maybe a rewind of who knew how much was in order here. Also, maybe Ace should stop rambling about the weird stuff and start with 'Welcome to Earth.'

"Ponies are, uh. Little horses? They're an animal. People ride them. We've got a stable in the garage here, and there's a bigger one off the other side of the island." She tugged a bit on the end of her braid. "So you're from a planet that has gremlins but not horses?"

"Yes," she said contritely. "We have many sorts of monsters at home. From your description of what a horse does, we use chocobos for the same thing. They're very large birds."

Yeul tried to think of a way to reassure Ace that she wasn't entirely lost. "I do understand a lot of the technology," she offered, hoping that would make up ground. "The airport was similar enough to be recognizable and the bus wasn't surprising at all."

Though how poorly driven it was had been.

"You ride birds?" That was a mix of interest and incredulousness. "That's way better than horses; horses can't fly."

"No, the chocobos can't fly," she said. "They're flightless, though they've wings for balance and gliding short distances. They're very fast however and very strong."

"Oh, like ostriches, got it. We've got birds like that." Ace waved a circle around her head. "Not round here, though. Here it's buses and cars on the mainland and horses and bikes on the island."

"Do you ride?" she asked curiously. "Horses, I mean. Or do you bike everywhere?"

Ace gave a little half snort. "I know how not to fall off one, but I walk everywhere; if you own a horse you're probably rich or came from some place or time where everybody's got 'em." She shrugged. "S'pose I could save up and buy a bike, but the island's not that big."

"Are bikes terribly expensive here?" Yeul didn't think they were, from what she remembered on Cocoon.

Then, because she was curious: "Do you like it here?"

"It's crazy!" That was a yes, though it did occur to Ace that she might need to clarify that. "I love it. So far, anyhow. Haven't got bored yet, and that beats both home and the last place I lived."

She glanced off toward town. "Everything not free's expensive when you don't have a job, but I bet there's some used bikes at the junk-shop for cheap. Or free, if you pick up a broken one from the scrapyard and fix it up."

"I wouldn't know how to fix it," she said with a bit of a laugh. "I'll have to see how I get by with walking first, until I get a better idea of the island."

"I would," Ace offered, "If you end up deciding you want one. I'm all right with a spanner; I used to help my friend Julian with his motorbike."

"I will keep that in mind," she promised. "I will ask you then, I mean, once I decide." Because it would be rude to just find a bike and then ask hopefully, Yeul thought. "Do you often put things back together?"

This time the tugging at her braid was a little more chagrinny. Was that a word? The grinny part was, at least. "Less often than I blow things apart, but you've gotta have a change every once in a while, right?"

Yeul laughed softly. "I have heard that change is good for people."

Though, to be honest, she wasn't a fan.

"Well, you'll get enough of that here." Lest the new girl think she was the mad bomber what bombs at midnight or something, Ace added, "I don't blow up bits of the school or anything." Aaaaaace... "...Anymore. Hard to believe I'm saying it, but I actually like the teachers here."

"Are you used to not liking teachers?" That seemed a bit peculiar to her. Wasn't a teacher's job to, well, teach? Did their personality really matter so long as they did that?

"At my old school, yeah? Some were all right, but most of 'em talked down to us like we were stupid, or acted like we were in jail instead of school." Or, you know. Expected her to live up to her potential, whatever the furk that was supposed to mean.
