Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Although the summer had been record-breakingly hot, the weather outside today was actually kind of pleasant. There was a cool breeze blowing across the lawn, making the smells of the buffet wander, and hopefully enticing people to come over to the school and welcome all the new folks.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out as usual, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Sorry," Olive apologized, reflexively. (Why she had thought swearing in front of Louisa May Alcott or whatever was a good idea, she didn't know.) "Yeah, okay, it's...no, seriously, time travel's not a thing. What's going on here?"

"I'm not all...science-oriented," Rilla said. "If you see a Mr. Murdoch--dark hair, adorable smile, top hat--he might be able to explain it in greater detail. All I I know is I boarded a train on Prince Edward Island and arrive here."

So her science guy was the Monopoly Man. Awesome.

"You took a train here?" Olive asked, biting her lip. "But...it's an island?"

Because, you know, time travel -- whatever. That was the important thing throwing her here.

"To a portal...thing," Rilla added. "Did you not do that?"

"I took a plane?" she pointed out. And okay maybe there was a portal...like thing but she'd been texting Todd at the time and had kind of figured it was just part of the airport.

"I did that in class once!" Rilla said. "Aeroplanes are so exotic, aren't they? Where are you from?"

"Ojai, California." She was not touching that 'aeroplanes are so exotic' thing. Because who said 'aeroplane,' first of all. "It's like an hour outside Los Angeles? We produce a lot of oranges."

"I love oranges! Sometimes we get one at Christmas," Rilla said happily. "That was one of the first things I noticed here: there's so much fruit available all the time! That and no one goes to church."

"I can get you oranges like all the time if you don't make me go to church," Olive said immediately.

Rilla sighed. "No one wants to go to church with me."

"...I could go like, once," Olive offered. Goddamn her stupid sense of compassion.

Somewhere, Marianne's sinner-sense was tingling and she didn't know why.

"You'll love it!"

Probably not.

"And afterwards, there's a wonderful pastry shop in town that I always stop into."

"Oh, well hey, nothing goes with God like...croissants," Olive said, hoping she sounded sort of convincing.

"I prefer bear claws," Rilla said earnestly.
