Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Although the summer had been record-breakingly hot, the weather outside today was actually kind of pleasant. There was a cool breeze blowing across the lawn, making the smells of the buffet wander, and hopefully enticing people to come over to the school and welcome all the new folks.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out as usual, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Honestly, that was close enough.

Dave had kept an eye out for name tags, so he was able to shout out, "Charles?" and hurry over as soon as he saw Chaz's tag.

Chaz glanced down at Dave and his own name tag. "Yeah. Uh, Chaz. Usually. But if you don't use nicknames or something I still respond to Charles. I just like Chaz." He shut up two minutes later than he really wanted to.

"I can stick to Chaz," Dave said. "I'm your big brother. Um, school-appointed, not a long lost brother or anything."

Dave let the explanation hang awkwardly for a second. "Hi, I'm Dave."

Chaz figured he would know if he had a long lost brother or something. Then again.

"Hi Dave. Is that short for David or are you just a Dave?" There was an awkward pause. They really should just have an awkward off. "The school-appoints me a sibling?"

"David, but it's really only my mom who calls me that," Dave said. "And yeah. I'm here to answer any questions you have about Fandom, prepare you for some of the bizarre aspects of living here, that kind of thing."

"Does it actually get cold here?" Chaz blurted out. "I'm from Vegas. We have tourists, gambling, and a lot of sun. This should be colder." Chaz's brain had helpfully provided him with average temperatures for both cities and expected participation, but he didn't blurt any of it out loud.

"Oh, it definitely gets colder than Vegas. I mean, winter actually happens here," Dave said. "Granted, I'm from Wisconsin, so 'winter' has a different meaning entirely to me. But to someone from a warm place? You'll probably be a little miserable in January. Sorry."

Chaz looked really unhappy about this. "And there's snow? Actual snow?"

"Among other things that might fall from the sky..." Dave said a little cautiously. "But don't worry, you'll get used to it."

Chaz tried to think of what else could fall from the sky. "Rain? Uh... satellites? Asteroids? Alien space ships?" He was kidding.

"At the last picnic, it was popsicles. Sometimes other food," Dave said. "I wish I was joking about this."

Chaz blinked down at Dave's head. "This is one of those punk on the new kid things, isn't it?"

"I really wish it was," Dave said. "I don't know the best way to explain this stuff, but... meet some of the other students, and definitely some of the teachers, and you'll get a feel for the place. Once you do, I can answer anything you want. It's easier if you don't dismiss anything you hear your first few days, though."

Chaz gave Dave a very long look, mentally hoping that he wouldn't notice that his eyes were different colors. "Like popsicles falling from the sky." His tone made it obvious that he didn't believe Dave.

"I didn't believe it at first either. But then I realized that I'm going to school 30 years in the future and everything else started to sound more possible."

Loooooong blink. "Thirty years in the future?" Chaz asked slowly. "Are you telling me it's 2042?" He frowned. "There's not nearly enough flying cars or jet-packs for that."

"No, no, other way around. I'm from 1981," Dave said. "But you know, I was surprised by the lack of jetpacks, too. The future's actually kind of disappointing."

There was more blinking. "You could make a fortune on the stock market." He finally blurted out.
