Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Although the summer had been record-breakingly hot, the weather outside today was actually kind of pleasant. There was a cool breeze blowing across the lawn, making the smells of the buffet wander, and hopefully enticing people to come over to the school and welcome all the new folks.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out as usual, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

C'mon, it's hard to get more Irish than Ronancooties!

"You're welcome." Ronan took a sip of his own (also, sadly, non-Irish) coffee before asking, "So. Ready to tackle a term of teaching these miscreants?"

Possibly! But it was easier to be a higher proof than them.

"I'm about as ready as I'll ever be, I suppose. I've got a lesson plan all written up, and I've been staring at it for the past week as if doing so will somehow make it better. It really isn't even as though I don't have experience teaching. It's just..."

He shrugged and took a mouthful of coffee. Mm.

"Fandom. I suppose back at the Xavier School, I could at least tell myself that it was either that, or tights."

... Some context would probably be good for that, Jono.

Ronan was going to spare a passing, non-verbalised thought (sorry, any passing telepaths) about Jono in tights, yes, because damn.

But context? Who needs context?

"Fandom," Ronan agreed, simply. "Hey, at least I don't need to give you all the warnings you won't believe."

"True enough," Jono replied, shrugging his shoulders (so much shoulder!) and tilting his head back to look up at the sky. "I'm pretty willing to admit that this place is capable of just about anything already. What I will need to get my head around is going from alumni to teacher, around here. You've done it before, right?"

Ronan nodded. "Started teaching at the beginning of the summer. It's... definitely an adjustment to be at the front of the room. But I was coming in with no teaching experience, too, which you say you have, so I doubt that'll be a problem."

He smirked a little before adding, "I wonder if sometimes the teachers who have been students trust the students a little more. To be able to handle themselves, I mean."

"Well, we've all been there and done it," Jono pointed out. "I think every time things were about to take a turn for the worst around here, there were at least twice as many students leading the charge as adults."

A beat. A frown.

"Possibly more, now that Ms. Winchester's left. I guess I'll have to introduce myself to whoever is taking her place, at some point. If they aren't expecting the insanity around here, a massive grey man telling them he's here to teach basic social skills to angry teenagers might clue them in a little."

Or it might not. It depended on where this new person was from, he supposed.

"That's exactly it," Ronan agreed. "We remember how competent the students are, so we're a little more inclined to trust them."

Not that he'd ever felt the teachers hadn't trusted them, when he was a student, exactly, so much as some had trusted their abilities more than others.

"With any luck," he added, "they'll have their own teaching buddy to help acclimate them."

"And with any more luck, they'll be somebody who we can trust to not try to take advantage of what our students are capable of."

A beat. A frown. Jono was remembering his time spent in Detention again, yes.

"I think we're all a little too wary to let that happen, though."

Ronan's eyes may have gone a little steely there, yes.

"Next time anyone tries anything like that," he said, flatly, "I saw we kill them and be done with it."

Well. He'd give them warning, first. But the nice thing about being a healer was knowing all the ways a body could break, too.

"I wouldn't sully Special Collections with her ilk again," Jono replied, his own tone as grave as Ronan's. "I never got along with it so well when I was working in the library, but after that mess with the Nothing... it deserves better."

His hands clenched into fists.

"There are proper prisons out there for her sort, though. Ones that make death seem like a mercy."

Ronan nodded. "Not in my world -- perhaps next time, we'll capture and send them off to yours."

Oh, now that would be awesome. Umbridge loose in the Marvelverse.
furnaceface: (Hmm.)

[personal profile] furnaceface 2012-08-25 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Umbridge wouldn't stand much of a chance against every person in tights that the entire universe could throw at her. She might make some leeway with her Imperios, but in the end, she was battling no less than gods, as well.

"Perhaps next time," Jono agreed, frowning into his coffee. "If we can get them that far before everyone else takes a pound of flesh from them in a very literal sort of way."

Ronan snorted. "Chances of that are minimal at best."

He shrugged, shaking off the mood. "Enough about that, I think. So you're all set for the term, then? As set as you can be, anyway, Powers only know what the island's going to throw at us next."

"I'd suggest we start a betting pool," Jono mused, "but I know I'd be wrong, whatever it is. Who really saw Umbridge coming back, after all? Or that time when the giant turtle-ox thing stole the children of the island away..."

Or any of it, really.

Jono could think of no other way to describe Silent Hill, really.

"And the time the stone angels were sending us back in time, and that time with the dinosaurs, and the zombies, and, oh, aliens blowing up the school right before I got here."

You could almost set your watch by it. Or at least your calendar.

"Before my time," Jono mused, shaking his head a little. "I'll survive somehow, I'm certain. I did manage to miss that mutagenic viral thing that left some of the people around here with claws or fangs or the like, at least."

Because the last thing Jono needed on top of what he already looked like was claws.

... He kind of already had the grey skin thing covered, anyhow.

Yeah. Mention of 'viral' had Ronan flashing back to the plague, so if he was looking, Jono could probably catch a flash of old guilt across Ronan's face.

"Sometimes I wonder if the island really does have it out for us," he said. "But then, if you think about it, it does seem to gather together people who can actually handle these things, so maybe it's doing its best to contain them?"

"If we're all here as Fandom Island's contingency plan for keeping her safe when all hell breaks loose, I demand a pay raise," Jono decided, managing to keep a straight face as he said it. "Though I suppose if we weren't here, this place would be a bit like hell on Earth, granted."

"I know a teacher's wages are a little wanting," Jono replied, smirking just faintly, "but really, I've already stated that I'll accept no less than four sticks of gum and a shoelace per month."

And at the end of the semester, he'd be able to lace two pairs of shoes!

Jono stuck his nose in the air and sniffed indignantly. Really.

"It's to make up for lost time," he explained. "I couldn't exactly chew gum back when I was doing library aide and TA work in my own student years."

No lower jaw.

Or. Something.

"But not my laces. I need those myself."
