Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Although the summer had been record-breakingly hot, the weather outside today was actually kind of pleasant. There was a cool breeze blowing across the lawn, making the smells of the buffet wander, and hopefully enticing people to come over to the school and welcome all the new folks.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out as usual, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Dany, however, freshly-arrived from Rome though she was, had thought to find a nametag and check the list for any adoptive siblings she may have earned.

"Jessica?" she asked, approaching tentatively as soon as she could see the other girl's name on her shirt. Behind her trailed three dragons the size of small dogs.

In case Jessica had not yet fully accepted that this place was...special, that would probably help.

Suddenly, the mysteries of Dany's name weren't very important.

"Yeah. Hi. Dae....person?" Jessica pointed to the dragons. "Are those what I think they are?"

"Daenerys," she said with a smile. "Please call me Dany -- it's easier. And they're dragons, so if that's what you think they are...."

"Daea... Yeah, okay, Dany. Are they real?" Jessica asked. "Are they going to eat me? Please say no, because that would be a terrible first day at a new school. Eaten by dragons."

"They won't eat you." That was the important one -- she needed to get that out before anything else. "I promise. Because yes, that would be the very worst sort of first day, I think. But they're real, and friendly." She shrugged, and sort of sheepishly added, "Welcome to Fandom."

"Thanks. Does everyone here have dragons and nobody told me about this before?" Jessica asked. "And sorry to keep focusing on them. I've just never met anyone with dragons before."

"They're rare where I'm from, as well," Dany offered. "And...to the best of my knowledge, I am the only one with dragons here, but I suppose that could have changed. I was absent for the summer."

"Do you mind if I ask where?" Jessica asked. "At least it's not another simple dragon question, right?"

"Home," she answered easily, smiling. "For half, anyway. And...per the dragons, you might have guessed 'home' is nowhere near here. More recently, I visited Rome, which I am given to understand does exist in this world." Turning a critical eye on Jessica, she ventured, "You're from this country, I take it? Or a close approximate? My eye for modern clothing still lacks, I'm afraid."

"Yeah, from up north in New York," Jessica said. There was a cue in there for her to play ignorant for a moment, and she went for it. "Did you just say 'this world'?"

"...welcome to Fandom!" Dany said again, smiling a little weakly. "I...may not be very good at this. Um. There are people from...other worlds here? I'm actually queen of a country called Westeros, which as you may have noticed does not exist on any map here."

Yakko ran up with a graduation cap on, a pointer stick in one hand, and a map on an easel in the other. "Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee..." he started to sing as he waved the pointer almost randomly as the map without any countries lighting up. After ten seconds of holding the note, he stopped, leaned in closer to look at the map, and gave a loud, "Hmph!" before turning to the girls and shrugging.

He then grabbed all of his stuff and ran off again.

Jess stared as that went on.

Once Yakko left, she let it sink in for a moment before saying, simply, "This place is weird."

"Yes," Dany agreed, simply. "It really is. But you grow accustomed to it -- or at least I did."

She looked off in the direction Yakko had run off in, and added, "But that was new."

"So, dragons, other worlds, whatever the hell that was... Anything else you want to blow my mind with right now?" Jessica asked. "And don't worry. I'm a wanna-bescientist. My goal is to have my mind blown by things. I'm just not used to it this often in this short a time."

"...sometimes strange things happen here, though they usually do not last too long," Dany offered, since Jessica had asked. "And people travel through time. My friend Lucrezia is from this world's year 1494, which I believe is something like five hundred years ago, give or take a dozen."

"Okay, casual time travel may have done it. I don't think I can process much more," Jessica said. "Because I'm pretty sure that's still technically impossible."

It didn't mean she didn't believe it. Human cloning wasn't possible either before a spider came along.

"It may take a little time," Dany assured her with a small smile. "I came from the opposite direction -- we don't have so much as indoor lighting or water where I'm from. Televisions, for instance, are still much a mystery."

"Well, if you need any help with any of that stuff ever, I'm a nerdy person who knows things like that," Jessica said. "There's no reason this sibling thing should only feature helping in one direction."

"I will almost certainly seek you out for that," she admitted. "My usual technological ally is from a dozen years in this world's past. My iPhone's antics escape him, for the most part."

"Oh yeah, I can handle those, no problem," Jessica said. "You, uh, you bought the iPhone here, right? You don't come from a society with no water but surprisingly good iPhone service, right?"

"No, but that would be quite a special place," Dany said, a little wistfully. "I left it here for the summer, as there would be no place to charge it at home. I can only imagine that it's clogged with the mail of voices and messages of text, now."

"It's probably a jerk move, but I'd probably end up deleting all of those. If it's that or fight through a three month backlog, being a jerk wins," Jessica mused.

"I will probably tell Siri to do it," Dany agreed. Did Dany actually understand how Siri worked? No. Still no.

"Is there anything with which you need help?" she asked, shaking her head as though to clear it. "I remember how disoriented I was my first few days, as well."

"Thanks, but I think I'm fine for now," Jessica said. "I just have to meet a roommate and hope nobody breaks any more scientific certainties before the end of the day."
