Practical Squiring, Thursday

"A knight is more than just a soldier when all is said and done. Anyone can have a weapon given to them and told to kill to defend their lord, but a knight is supposed to be better than that."

Emphasis on the 'supposed to be' there. Today they met in a regular classroom, devoid of barrels, or armor, or swords. Jaime granted the students a slightly brittle smile as he kept on. "To become a knight, you are made to swear vows before your gods--who or whatever they may be--vows that demand you protect the defenseless, defend the weak, obey your king and liege lord... All sorts of vows."

Perhaps it was Brienne's fault that he was even bringing this up for class. Time spent with that beast of a woman had forced him to remember when he'd actually believed in honor and glory.

"But what do you do when they conflict?" Jaime asked. "You will be an oath breaker regardless of your choice. So where does your honor lay? To defend the weak or to obey your master?"

"No, not to whomever fills the spot." Cassidy said softly, shaking her head. "You have to be born as a Queen. If I have to sacrifice myself for the safety of my people, I will." She tilted her head. "I never said that I would leave them empty handed. If something had happened so badly that I was at the point of having to sacrifice myself, my allies and the Queen of the Realm would have been alerted. Word spreads quickly in Kaeleer. If a Queen in one Realm is endangered, other neighboring Queens and their males would come to help if they could." She paused. "Well, no. The males would make sure their Queen is bundled away in a safe place before being ready to ride the Killing Edge to come to the assistance of a village or territory Queen."

Her brother and cousin would probably be among those riding that edge if she was in that much danger.

"There are bad, tainted people in Kaeleer who might try to do the unthinkable and harm a Queen. However, there are more people that are good with honorable souls and hearts who would hold to the ways of the Blood. There was a very horrible war a long time ago between two Realms that caused a great deal of death and sorrow." Cassidy's features were sad when she thought about that. "Since then, the Realms have been at peace and there is honorable give and take among the Blood. The Territory Queens work very hard to keep their land and people safe."

She certainly hoped no one wanted to see her dead. That was a terrible thought that would now worry her for a little while. Thanks, Jaime.

"No one is perfect, but all we can do is try to set a good example with our honor and our duty." Cassidy said softly. "I may not be perfect, but I know I am on the path to being a very good Queen. I will not sacrifice my honor and my vow to my people to make friends. If that is what my allies look for, then they can look somewhere else."

"It's all any of us can do or hope for." She bit her lip. "I want to be the best Queen for my people, but I will admit that your questions give me a great deal to think about."

She was young, Jaime. She believed in the good of all people.
