Espionage & Infliltration, or, How to Play the Spy Game & Win (Weds, Period 4)

When the students filed into the classroom today, they'd probably notice that their teacher was not the young blonde Japanese woman that normally taught them. In fact, their teacher was a tall, lanky redhead who looked like he could be some kind of Heinz 57 American number, with his hair pulled back in a rat-tail, red tattoos under his violently blue eyes, and a classy suit that was worn in a way that would make any fashion designer break down and weep.

"Yo, Rookies!"

And he looked pretty damn comfortable up there at the front of the room, too.

"Name's Reno. Doji's a good friend of mine, and she asked me if I could do a guest lecture for her this week. See if I can pass on any of my vast amounts of knowledge onto you guys." He looked over the group, eyebrow raised, and then he settled back to lean against the front of the desk. "This ought'a be rich, yo."

He loved you, each and every one.

"So once upon a time, there was this real jerkass spy. Didn't dress the part, didn't sound the part. Wouldn't do nothin' in his downtime. If he had time off, he damn well earned it, and screw you if you wanted him to chase down some dumbass kid while he was on vacation. You could damn well do it yourself. But, the thing was, nobody knew what to make of this guy. He was a member of the most elite group of special agents in the friggin' world. He was the guy they went to if they had somethin' big and messy to take care of. Hunt down some human experiment who got away? Or chase down a runaway who was the last member of an extinct race? He was your guy. Need to blow up a chunk of city to frame this group of eco-terrorists? Him, too. Because, for all he looked like shit at it and for all he acted like he didn't give a damn, he did the job. He did the job well, and he did the job without question, and he would'a died for it a thousand times over, yo. Why? Because he was a Turk. Arguably one of the best. And bein' a Turk was all he ever had back then, because gods knew he gave up his soul a long time before that, yo."

Not that Reno was talking about anybody in particular or anything. This was just some totally hypothetical guy.

"Here's what I'm gettin' at, Rookies. Maybe you've done big shit. Maybe you still got clean hands. But wherever you're sittin', I want you to all take a few steps back right now and look at where you wanna go from here, yo. You want to do the big shit? You want to be special agents, keep playin' these spy games after high school? Then you gotta brace yourself, because someday, someone's gonna ask you to do things that maybe you ain't made to do, yo. You might just be a hacker, sittin' safe behind a computer screen, but someday your boss might ask you to install the virus that launches the nukes. You might be the double agent, collectin' intel from the inside and reportin' back to home base, but what happens if you get busted? You ready to take out as many people as you need in order to get free again? Because if you get caught, if you get compromised, they're gonna do what it takes to make you talk, yo. What are you willin' to do, in order to do the job?"

Reno straightened, hands in his pockets as he looked over the group.

"Some of you are gonna find that you're too damn human. That's fine. Most of my Rookies didn't have a clue comin' into the job just how much of themselves they were gonna have to give up on. I couldn't have guessed how far I was gonna have to go, to get the job done." He gestured to the class. "I want you guys today to think about how far it is you're willin' to go. You can discuss it with the group, or write it down, or just sit quiet and think about it. What's your mission worth? A life? An entire nation's freedom? Your own life? How far is it you're willing to go, when your boss, your country or company or whatever, tells you to jump? How much of your humanity do you think you're prepared to turn off, Rookies? I'm curious to find out, yo."
