Art Games, Monday, P2 [Week 5]

No one at the front of the classroom this morning was looking particularly peppy or energetic this morning. For these two, that was very unusual. Alternate universes were traumatic and exhausting.

Everyone should know what was coming on classes after those kinds of weeks by now. There was a television set up at the front of the classroom and several comfy beanbags in front of it, giving everyone a good view.

“Okay guys, I know you’ve probably all had a rough time, so we are doing nothing taxing today,” Angela promised. “Pull up a beanbag, watch the movie if you want to... Take a nap, if you want to...”

“If you need either of us, we will be here.”

Arietty smiled back. "If I could only work out how to borrow something this large."

"Borrow it? Or 'borrow' it?" Kenzi said, relaxing back into her own. "Now I'm trying to imagine you making off with this thing, and it's hilarious."

Arietty didn't understand the difference between the two terms. Borrowing was borrowing, wasn't it?

"Borrow it," she said. "I'm a borrower. And I'm sure I could work something out. I'd just have to borrow some twine first. Maybe some pulleys. . . ."

"Some people give back stuff they borrow," Kenzi said. And it was clear she wasn't one of those people. She grinned. "Hey, one of those furniture dollies. Get it on there and find a way to push."

Arietty wrinkled her nose. She didn't like pushing large things. Or returning borrowed things. "The trick is to borrow things that won't be missed. Then no one asks for it back. As for this thing. . . . If only I still had James' car. I could drive it away."

James' car was a radio controlled Mini. Arietty missed it terribly.

"Who's James? Boyfriend, friend?" Kenzi stretched her legs out, hands folded over her stomach. Bean bags were nirvana. "Hmmmm. I like your approach. I mostly end up borrowing things people get annoyed about because they're too cool not to."

"James is my bean friend, back home. He's not quite as big as you are. I think maybe he's very young." Arietty looked up, surprised. "You're a borrower, too? I've never met a bean-sized borrower before."

Kenzi held out a pinky finger to introduce herself. "Kenzi. Professional borrower. Most big people just don't get it... Bean? Okay, confused. I'm picturing a kid who's made out of a beanstalk."

"Arietty Clock." Arietty carefully took the tip of Kenzi's pinkie in both hands and shook it. "Not a veggie bean," she said. "A human bean."

Kenzi registered that, then had a hard time not snickering. "Ohhhh. Gotcha. So this James had a car you could borrow? Sweet. I've never managed to keep any of the cars I've borrowed." She was imagining some ten or twelve-year-old with his toy car, watching Arietty drive it all over the place.

Now she was tempted to get one.

If she let Arietty borrow it, then she had her full support on that.

"Oh yeah. It was a big help when I had to rescue my parents from being dissected in a laboratory. He had a plane, too, that we used to sneak into the building."

She hadn't gotten to steer that one, but it was almost as much fun.

Kenzi's jaw dropped. "Holy crap. They were going to dissect them!? What kind of crazy people do that?" Then, with a bit more admiration, "What kind of crazy person goes to rescue them? That's... wow."

"They're my parents," Arietty said with a little shrug. "I couldn't leave them there."

Kenzi totally could. But then, that was her parents.

"Very, very cool. I'm glad you guys got away, jeez." She shook her head. "It is not cool to borrow people. I'm just sayin'."

"People," Arietty said thoughtfully. "Are almost always going to be missed."

"Exactly." Kenzi shook her head. "But yeah. Shoes, boots, money, electronics... I don't borrow as much as I used to. If people are going to miss their stuff and ask where it went, you can't be around for them to ask." She grinned at Arietty. "I bet that worked out great for you."

"It helps when no one knows you're there. That's what we borrowers try to do back home, hide away from the beans, even if they're the ones with all the stuff to borrow. But it's really lonely, and I'm much too tired of spending all my time under the floorboards. And everyone here is just so nice!"

A pause.

"Well, except for that cat. I think maybe he really did want to eat me."

"Okay, that's just wrong," Kenzi decided. "No one should eat food that talks back, I don't care where they're from." Arietty's life sounded fun until she got to the lonely part. Then something else clicked, and Kenzi started laughing. "Were you the one singing in the walls?"

Arietty clapped her hand over her mouth. "You heard me?"

Sure, she hadn't been much concerned about it at the time, but it was quite an embarassment for a borrower.

Kenzi snickered. "I thought it was the ghost! Or a new ghost, or that the gremlins got into the booze..."

"Gremlins. Are those the nasty green monsters that live in the vents and things? I've tried to avoid them."

Even more than some people at the school tried to, even. For an average person, a gremlin bite was a hassle. For Arietty, it would be like being eaten by a dinosaur.

"Yeah, if they bite you, you hallucinate...." Kenzi paused. "Or in your case, aaaaaack. Crap. How have you managed to get away from those guys?"

"I can usually tell when they're coming." That "about to be seen" borrower sense came in mighty handy. "They're not too hard to avoid if they don't know you're there."

"That's good. Jeez." Kenzi frowned. "We should get you an itty gun, or a suit of armor, or something, though. Or a tank."

A TANK. A TANK WOULD BE AWESOME.

"I have a gun!" Arietty was quite proud of this. She pulled out her little tiny action figure dart gun -- that was the size of a pistol gripped sawed off shotgun for her. "It doesn't do much damage, but James says getting shot with it is very distracting."
