Detention, Depths of the Castle, Friday

So, one of the important things to realize about detention was that the monotony of everyone's daily lives was part of the punishment. That meant that even though someone had died yesterday, the day's schedule didn't change a bit.

After all, most of your little lives just weren't that important in the grand scheme of things.

Cassidy was sitting against the wall, tugging a little at the tattered skirt she was wearing. There was so much going on in her mind and so much that she wasn't sure about.

Karla had told her that her jewel hadn't really shattered and it was just a test. She wanted to get out of this place so she could be a better Queen. She was making lists in her head of what she needed to do as well as she could be since she was still trying to deal with the dying landscape in her mind.

When Karla came back, Cassidy dragged her fingers through her hair, trying to straighten out some of it.

Oh, Cassidy. Karla felt so awful for what she'd done to you. "Hey, you," she said softly, settling down next to her. "How're you today."

"I am still here," Cassidy said in some confusion. "I promised you I would be a better Queen and be responsible again.'

"And I believe you," Karla said. "In fact, I'm pretty sure you're going to be freed tomorrow." She laced her fingers through Cassidy's. "You think you'll be ready? Tomorrow, you're going to be let out."

Just not the way she was probably expecting.

Cassidy started to flinch, but when she reminded herself that it was Karla, she eased a little and let herself nod.

"You said yesterday that I could leave, but then I didn't. What did I do wrong, Karla? I didn't mean to fail at my responsibilities, I promise."

"You didn't," Karla said, letting approval warm her voice. Trying to mask the despair at how neatly she'd twisted Cassidy around. "And I see you're taking care to look like a proper Queen today. Yesterday, after--after Sookie, we thought that a few days without any big changes would be best for everyone down here. Give everyone time to grieve without disturbing them further."

She gave Cassidy a hopeful look. "You understand that, don't you?"

"Sookie was a nice person and Raven shouldn't have killed her," Cassidy said softly. "I understand the need to have time to grieve." Her eyes cleared momentarily. "You promise this time, Karla? You promise that you'll take me out of here tomorrow and help me do what I'm supposed to do again?"

She looked down, but it was clear from her psychic scent that there was something else that was pulling at her.

Karla nodded, clasping Cassidy's hands. "I swear on my Jewels, Cassidy," she said, willing her voice not to break. "Tomorrow, you will come out of here. On my Jewels, I vow."

Cassidy let some of her hope spill over onto Karla.

"My Jewel," she said sadly. "My tiger-eye shattered and turned to dust, Karla. You said it was a lie to test me, but I saw it and felt it. How can I be the Queen you are telling me to be and do what I'm supposed to do without my jewel?"

Her mind was starting to wander again and she was trying desperately to not let it.

Karla frowned at her. "Are you doubting a Black Widow's Craft?" she asked. Granted, Raven was no Black Widow and Karla felt dirty even for suggesting it, but she figured it would be easiest for Cassidy to understand it if she put it in familiar terms. "We are the caste of illusions. If we want you to believe something is real, you would not know otherwise, would you?"

Cassidy shook her head. "No, I wouldn't. I'm not a Black Widow, just a witch," she acknowledged. "It just seemed ... "
