Detention, Depths of the Castle, Friday

So, one of the important things to realize about detention was that the monotony of everyone's daily lives was part of the punishment. That meant that even though someone had died yesterday, the day's schedule didn't change a bit.

After all, most of your little lives just weren't that important in the grand scheme of things.

The box definitely weighed less than it should if there were Pop-Tarts in there. "Those are a gift," she said in a slight singsong. "Aren't you going to open it?"

She didn't know Alex well enough to send him thoughts on a psychic link, but she was thinking, *Open, please! Open it!* loudly enough that if he had any kind of psychic powers at all, he'd probably be able to hear it.

Alex was a fear god. He had a whole lot of psychic powers, but they were very focused. He caught her thought, and the box definitely didn't feel like it contained Pop-Tarts, so he shot her a wary look before he opened it to take a peek inside.

Inside the box was a single open wrapper. Inside that wrapper was a slip of edible paper, much like the type that the newspaper was written on every day.

As soon as Karla saw that he's seen it, she began shrieking with laughter. "Oops!" she said, reaching to snatch the box away again. "Guess there's nothing in there after all!"

Her eyes, however, were glaring at him, demanding that he play along, pretend that she was simply being cruel.

Alex yanked the box back, glaring at her. "You bitch! Maybe I'll just keep the box!" Or sleight of hand the piece of paper out of the box. At least one of those.

Karla ineffectually tussled him for the box for a few moments, before letting the box go to swipe at his face with her nails. 'Unfortunately,' her balance was off due to all that tugging and she missed his skin by a whisper. "Fine, you miserable whoreson," she hissed at him. "Keep the damn box for all the joy it brings you. I hope you eat whatever's in there and choke."

"I'd say don't insult my mom, but I have no idea who she was, so, whatever," Alex sniped back at her before 'retreating' to his cot to investigate the contents of the box.

Inside the foil wrapper, the slip of paper was no bigger than Alex's palm. Written on it were just a few stark words.

Tomorrow. Be prepared. --Resistance

Surely Alex knew what to do with that paper after he read it, right?

Well, she had said he could eat whatever was in there. But he wasn't planning on choking on it.
