Detention, Depths of the Castle, Friday

So, one of the important things to realize about detention was that the monotony of everyone's daily lives was part of the punishment. That meant that even though someone had died yesterday, the day's schedule didn't change a bit.

After all, most of your little lives just weren't that important in the grand scheme of things.

Dinah almost froze up at that single thought, but she shot back What the fuck, Karla! and then snarled, trying to bend Karla's arms back, one knee coming up toward Karla's gut. HOW?

*Plan! Plan!* Karla wheezed, both mentally and audibly. She struggled to get Dinah off of her, which was a convenient cover for her thoughts to spill out in a panicked stream. Mother Night, Dinah was still strong. *Got caught and Imperio'd deliberately so we'd have someone in position to check out Detention's defenses! Only way they'd believe me and I'm one of the few with enough magical theory to pull it off!*

But Dinah knew Karla. How well would she have been able to allay their suspicions if she hadn't been Imperio'd?

Ghanima set everything up. Took away some memories. Replaced others. Helped me break the Imperio this afternoon!

Show me, Dinah demanded. She'd be able to see the truth, if she saw Ghanima in Karla's mind, setting the traps for Umbridge. Hope was making her hands shake. She covered by pushing Karla away from her, and then stepping forward to grab for her hair (gently) and ear (firmly). "If I rip off your ears," she hissed, "will our screaming still be funny?"

"We'll see how loudly you scream when I take out your tongue with my bare fist!" Karla howled, even as she projected the memory of Ghanima working with her at first to prepare her mind for Umbridge and again removing that awful pink fuzziness. "I'll string your eyes on barbed wire and wear them as a necklace!"

Sorry about this, Dinah sent, elation in her tone, giving Karla just enough warning to brace herself, as she head-butted her, then got her hands around Karla's throat in an apparent chokehold, fingers straining but not tightening. What's the plan?! "You can't take me, Karla. And after what you did to Sam yesterday--" That snarl was very damn convincing.

Karla couldn't deny she owed a lot for yesterday. From breaking Sam and Rinoa to feeling nothing when Sookie died. It was all she could do to fight back to just maintain her cover.

*We're taking Detention tomorrow,* Karla sent. *Everyone, save those who are taking other jobs, like distractions and Darkness knows what else.*

That was an inarticulate shriek of joy inside Karla's head, covered by Dinah saying aloud, "You're going to regret this--" And adding, YOU ARE CRAZY THANK YOU STILL MAD BUT REALLY HAPPY.

That wince was not feigned. Owie. Damn it, Dinah, no squealing in Karla's head. *Should I continue to be Imperio'd to spare your feelings?* she retorted. *It needed doing so we could get this information, dammit!*

I don't bounce back like I did two years ago. I'll get over it. Sometime. Promise. Just... don't push. Dinah took a breath, 'tightening' her hands, and sent, Throw me now. Hard.

*For what it's worth,* Karla whispered in her mind, *I'm sorry.*

And then she did as Dinah said, and flung her, with all her might. She didn't bother to hold back. Dinah could take care of herself.

"Don't you ever, ever lay a hand on me again!" Karla shrieked, taking care to sound hoarse. "I'll cut it off next time and--"

She swallowed back the words 'and let you bleed out.' Not now. Not with Sookie so recently. "--And cauterize your stumps with hot coals!"

Dinah rolled with it even as she hit the floor, still wincing, but not seriously hurt. She propped herself up on her elbows and gave Karla a mean smile, and then a little golf-clap. "All hail... the Queen of Glacia, ice and the darkness." She let out a slow breath. "Saetan would be proud."

And that part, at least, was sincere. And no one who hadn't heard about him before would know what Dinah *really* meant.
