Detention, Depths of the Castle, Friday

So, one of the important things to realize about detention was that the monotony of everyone's daily lives was part of the punishment. That meant that even though someone had died yesterday, the day's schedule didn't change a bit.

After all, most of your little lives just weren't that important in the grand scheme of things.

"If they're going to be a -- permanent installation," Dinah allowed. "Then yeah. We need to just face it, as a group. Not feel so weird about it." She leaned her head back against the wall, eyes closing. "It's a lot less scary than our visitors are."

"I suppose," Jack allowed. "She's not going to hurt anyone. She's at rest. Raven -- I can't say the same for her."

"Besides," he added. "If I got killed, I'd want people to say nice things about me, wouldn't you?"

"Yup." Dinah's smile was grim. "It's one of the few consolations we've got here." She turned her head to Jack. "'Jack was a scholar and a gentleman, and an impressive werewolf. He also had a terrific accent.'" Okay. Black humor. But it was the only kind she had left.

Jack grinned his thanks, then reciprocated with, "Dinah had a smile and a kind word for each of us, did her best to befriend everyone here, and almost never complained about not being able to use her powers."

Dinah snickered at that, the closest she'd been to real laughing in ages. "'Jack was great at recitation and distraction, and did not bite anyone else, making things in Detention even more problematic. We're going to miiiiss him." She looked over at Bobby and Sookie, and sobered. "...damnit."

"Dammit," Jack agreed, since that was really all he could say. "I wish I could say I thought we'd get past this, but ... I can't."

"If..." No, not if. God, was she that far gone? "When we get out of here. We'll have to make sure there's -- something. A place for Bobby. And Sookie." Dinah rubbed at her eyes. The light shining on the ice-casket left an after-image on her eyelids. "But you're right. I have no idea how to cope with this. Or ever telling anyone about it."

"I won't," Jack said, in a tightly controlled voice. "No point giving everyone nightmares."

"You may be on to something." Dinah looked over at Sam with a sad look. "And getting help for the others who are in worse shape than us."
