Detention, Depths of the Castle, Friday

So, one of the important things to realize about detention was that the monotony of everyone's daily lives was part of the punishment. That meant that even though someone had died yesterday, the day's schedule didn't change a bit.

After all, most of your little lives just weren't that important in the grand scheme of things.

"Most recent...?" The goings-on in detention hadn't been a thing Kennedy had ever really concerned herself with much, so she hadn't realized or, to be honest, bothered to care.

She rolled her eyes. "God, Raven," she muttered in disgust. Hey, could've been annoyance at a colleague making a hamfisted mess of things, right?

Idiot, she snarled at herself. Did you have fun helping all this happen?

"What would you expect of someone who's got a demon inside their head, who's under a spell of obedience, and who never wanted to hurt anyone in her life?" Dinah asked in a flat tone. She may not feel forgiving toward Raven, but she knew who was ultimately responsible. "She's completely lost it. She's a wind-up doll for Umbridge now." C'mon, Kennedy. Fight whatever hold they have on you.

More quietly, she said, "How's everyone else? Jaime, Priestly?" She swallowed. "Momoko?"

"Hey. Watch your mouth," Kennedy said sharply, for the benefit of anyone within earshot. "Just because you're already in here doesn't mean you're off the hook."

Yeah. Good one, Kenn. Keep threatening your friends. This is totally what you always wanted to be. She was horrified, now that she was getting a good look around detention. Good. She could use that like some kind of mental handhold.

She leaned in, making a good show of looking threatening, and dropped her voice. "Don't know." Complete sentences took too much effort. "Okay, I think."

Dinah gave her a bitter smile, then briefly, a much more real, relieved one. The kind you give a friend you haven't seen in a long, looooong time. "I'll be careful." The smile dropped off her face. "I don't want to wind up like some people in here." Calvin. Cassidy. Rinoa, sometimes. "You should be careful too, Kennedy. Even if you're a good little soldier now, that's no guarantee."

"What, are you trying to tell me what to do? You're the one who's in here," Kennedy said coolly, hoping Dinah read the subtext correctly. "I'm not. Be on the right side and maybe then you can give me advice."

Which was to say, yeah, she would be careful.

That sounded so damn familiar Dinah almost laughed. Then had to close her eyes against how much it hurt. "Same old Kennedy."

Good.

Could she be the same old Kennedy? Because she wanted to. And she-- real, accept-no-substitutes, not-from concentrate Kennedy-- always got what she wanted.

Yeah, that sounded like too nice a prospect to turn down.

She let one side of her mouth curl up into a smirk. "Tchah, please. More like new and improved."
