Detention, Depths of the Castle, Friday

So, one of the important things to realize about detention was that the monotony of everyone's daily lives was part of the punishment. That meant that even though someone had died yesterday, the day's schedule didn't change a bit.

After all, most of your little lives just weren't that important in the grand scheme of things.

Karla raised an eyebrow at the peremptory tone. "Are you talking to me?" she asked.

She headed over to April anyway, mostly because she had a message to deliver.

"Well, I'm kinda bored," April explained, sounding almost the tiniest bit affronted. "I was hoping I could be insulted."

Karla looked her up and down. Slowly. "I'm not sure why I should waste the time," she admitted, while trying to figure out how she could pass a message along to this female.

"Everyone else got insulted," April pointed out in... well, yeah, that was kind of a whine. "Come on. I'm right here. Sitting duck."

Karla was now blinking at her. A lot. Maybe the time down here had cracked her, too? "Are you really feeling left out because no one's tormented you?" she asked, incredulous. "I'm pretty sure that there are any number of people in there willing to trade places with you."

"Those people can't draw a perfect map of the cracks on the ceiling," April pointed out. "You're really not gonna do it?"

Karla sighed. "You should save up your energy and for something better than getting insulted," she told the girl. "You're going to have a lot of Resistance friends in here with you soon. Maybe you should think about putting together some kind of welcome wagon."

She tried to make her voice sound vaguely threatening, but the glare she was giving April was much more of the Listen to what I'm really saying!

Oh, April got the message loud and clear. She was lazy, but she wasn't stupid. "Yeah?" she said. "Around when?"

"Maybe as early as tomorrow," Karla said with a spiteful grin. "Whenever we can round them all up. They're like roaches, you know. They like to congregate in the dark, but as soon as you shine a light on then, they vanish."

Her grin grew wider. "But now that I'm here, Lady Umbridge's forces now every nook and cranny to search. Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised at all if people started showing up en masse as early as tomorrow."

April nodded slowly. "Good to know," she said. "Almost as good as being insulted, now that I think of it."

"Misery," April repeated doubtfully. "You won't even insult me."

Was she helping Karla train to enhance her cover? Maybe. Was she also just fucking around because she was bored? Absolutely.

"If you'd like, I can show you the difference," Karla offered. She held up a hand and let fire play over her fingers. "Here. You tell me your favorite insult and I'll brand it in your skin? Okay?"

Of course Karla was bluffing! She was only pretending to be a horrible person today! Yesterday, she probably would have written something like misbegotten spawn of a gutterwhore, just for length's sake, but today, Karla actually was interested in branding anyway.

She glared at April, giving her a look that hopefully suggested something along the lines of If you make me break my cover, I very well MIGHT brand you!

It was an eloquent look.

April rolled her eyes. "Fine," she said, and made a dramatic show of pushing back her chair.

Maybe she'd go bother Jono.
