Detention, Depths of the Castle, Friday

So, one of the important things to realize about detention was that the monotony of everyone's daily lives was part of the punishment. That meant that even though someone had died yesterday, the day's schedule didn't change a bit.

After all, most of your little lives just weren't that important in the grand scheme of things.

"I'm okay." Calvin was vaguely aware something badder than usual had happened, but practising their stealth skills had suddenly gotten very important around about then so he wasn't sure what. "Hobbes not so much."

"Oh? What's wrong with him?" It might have been wrong to go along with the delusion, but anything that made people feel better at this point seemed good to her.

"He's worried that you're down." Calvin didn't know why Hobbes thought that, but since he'd always been the better one with girls, he was going to take his word for it.

He held out the plush tiger to Zoe, battered and restitched, floppy from not having quite enough filling. "He says it's always better with a tiger. It's part of their charm."

"Well, he is very charming looking," Zoe said, patting Hobbes' little head. "If you're down too, you should hold onto him. He is yours, after all."

Calvin nodded. "Okay, but if you need to borrow him, I don't mind," he said. "'cause he says it's important. Though I think he just wants more belly rubs." Because Hobbes was a furry, little traitor where belly rubs were concerned.

"Well, if it's important... you know, I haven't gotten to give a belly rub in a long time." Ah, the things Zoe never imagined saying while stuck in detention. "If you really don't mind..." she said, trailing off and holding out her hand.

"I don't," Calvin said, handing Hobbes over. Because she was trustworthy...even if she was a girl.

Zoe was a totally trustworthy girl! She took Hobbes carefully, not wanting to rip any of his stitches, and rubbed her fingers over his belly. "Awww, he's still nice and fuzzy."

"He's lucky to have you to help take care of him," Zoe said. Look, at least one person down here deserved to be vaguely pleased.

"He takes care of me too." If by help you meant provided a focus for a disconnect from reality, so Calvin never really acknowledged how terrible their situation was on a conscious level. "We have to look out for each other."

Zoe rubbed Hobbes' belly for a little while longer before breaking into a soft, genuine smile. "Well, what do you know, I do feel a little better now."
