Detention, Depths of the Castle, Thursday

Another beautiful day had begun in Fandom, not that anyone in detention would have noticed. The lack of sunlight, the pleasant sound of Umbridge's voice, and the slightly stale smell of breakfast were all important aspects to making every day in detention routine! Surely everyone knew that surprises were no fun.

Look, the week was half over already and no one had been taken out and killed so far. That had to count for something, right?

The next time Dinah saw Karla, she was going to be in so much trouble.

"I don't either. You know that. I wish he were out there, trying to get to us." She bit her lip, and said softly, "I almost wish that his ghost were here with you. But..."

"You're here. That much I know," Sam said with a gentle smile. "I'm sorry. I know you're trying to help."

"Yeah." Dinah squeezed his hand again, holding back tears with an effort. "I'm here, and I'm your friend, and I don't want you to be in here." She closed her eyes. "If you really can't take it any more..."

"What?" Sam asked. "If I can't take it any more... what?"

"You could pretend," Dinah whispered. "You could tell them-- you'll be good, you just want to be left alone. Maybe Dean or your dad could get you off the island. Principal Winchester -- she might agree."

Or maybe Dinah just hurt for him too much to watch Sam in pain.

"But what about you? You'd still be in here," Sam said, shaking his head. "I can't leave without you."

Dinah leaned against him, and sent, I'll be okay. I mean. I'd miss you. Some of the yearning came through there, without her meaning for it too. But it would help to know you're okay somewhere.

"I'd find a way to get you out," Sam whispered. "I wouldn't leave you here." Dinah had been far too good of a friend for that.

"I know," Dinah whispered. She threaded her fingers through his. She hoped that wherever he was, Peter understood. I'm so tired of watching people suffer and die.

"Me too," Sam said softly. "When we get out, it's gonna be together, end of story."

Dinah nodded, throat closing on tears. When. Yes. It will happen, damnit. She released a shaky breath. "Love you, Sam."

It didn't matter how she meant that. She had to hold onto the people she had, whatever they meant to each other.

Sam smiled softly and gave Dinah's hand another grateful squeeze. "Love you too."
