Detention, Depths of the Castle, Thursday

Another beautiful day had begun in Fandom, not that anyone in detention would have noticed. The lack of sunlight, the pleasant sound of Umbridge's voice, and the slightly stale smell of breakfast were all important aspects to making every day in detention routine! Surely everyone knew that surprises were no fun.

Look, the week was half over already and no one had been taken out and killed so far. That had to count for something, right?

"Well I can't disagree with you there." Leda said cheerfully. "I should be running through the forest, helping princes and queens find their true love." She giggled. "Or making cookies for all the good little boys and girls to give to Father Christmas. Maybe I'd make the cookies dance for them too. They always liked that one."

"Who doesn't like dancing cookies?" Karla asked. "So, let's get you out of here, hmm? I'll bring you to the Preserve myself, for all your cookie dancing needs. Doesn't that sound like a wonderful idea?"

Within Leda, Scent of Heather was suspicious. When they had first arrived, Umbrage had informed them in no uncertain terms that an Elf's proper place was, quite literally, enslavement.

Leda had managed to resist the imperious curse somehow, but it had been that struggle that had made them what they were. Then there had been a fight, but that wasn't important right now.

What was important was that while Leda loved the idea of going to the preserve with this beautiful girl, Scent of Heather wondered what the catch was.

"It does." Leda nodded. "I never got to see the preserve before...well you know."

Oh, Leda could still be quite useful in the woods. There were herbs to harvest and litter to pick up and who else but Leda would make the cookies for dancing anyway?

"We should go together," Karla agreed with a nod. "I know some of the best places, too. It's just..." She looked at Leda and trailed off, as if she wasn't certain about something.

"Just what?" Leda asked, a knowing smirk on her face. She had a few flirty remarks prepared, just in case.

"If I let you out of here and you misbehaved, you'd get us both into trouble," Karla said sadly. "I don't want to get in trouble just because you decided you couldn't follow the rules or help out with chores."

"Oh I bet I could follow your rules." Leda said softly. She leaned forward to whisper; "If you asked really nicely."

Then suddenly she jerked back, as if yanked from behind. "Hey!"

"Hey!" Leda protested.

"That is enough!" Scent of Heather snarled at Leda, hauling her back and shoving her away. "Have some self respect if not sense you silly girl!"

Scent of Heather now regarded Karla with cool contempt. "Your pretty little lies will avail you nothing, Mortal."

Karla could tell the change, almost an imperceptible shift in Leda's psychic scent. "Neither will all your grand hauteur, elf," she said, with a fair bit of her own Queenly regality. "You are nothing and less than nothing. I was only offering to add a bit of dignity to your station."

Scent of Heather laughed. It was so cute when they tried to rise above their betters. "I will dance on your grave a century after you are gone little girl. Your life, all your lives are but a blink of an eye to me." Slight exaggeration but who's counting.

"Oh, little house elf, aren't you the cutest?" Karla said with a laugh. "Tending my grave, possibly. Or just continuing to cut the crusts off the sandwiches you make for my descendants. Your kind was made to serve, no matter how high and mighty you think you are."

Scent of Heather's laugh this time was cruel. Before Faery and Earth became separate realms, it had not been unheard of for the Unseelie to take human children as slaves. The Wild Elves still collected 'pets' sometimes, if the tales could be believed. And then of course, there was the Wild Hunt.

"Oh you dear sweet creature." If she sounded a bit like Umbrage just now it was only because the kindness in her voice was completely fake. "I will keep the prettier of your grandchildren as pets. The others, they will be sport for my hounds."

"Woah," Leda muttered. "You're scaring more than Pinky right now babe."

Florida too was regarding Scent of Heather like she didn't know her.

"And where will these mythical hounds be?" Karla asked. "In the wilds of your mind? Shall you populate your poor broken mind with shades of whole populations as one more step to stave off crumbling in on yourself entirely?"

Oh well played Karla.

The sudden change in subject threw Scent of Heather for a moment. Dimly, somewhere within she was aware that she, Leda and Florida had all been a single entity.

But she recovered quickly. "Broken?" she sneered. "Is that what they told you? You may have 'broken' some of these weak humans, but you have not, nor shall you ever, break us."

"So there." Leda grinned. Florida growled in agreement.

"And how many of you are in there?" Karla asked, cheerfully enough. "You're a reflection in a shattered mirror, sweetheart. There should only be one of you, and yet there are three. How does that work, hmmm?"

Even Scent of Heather was having trouble with this line of attack.

For a brief moment, Florida came forward, growling at Karla, but Scent of Heather quickly regained control.

"Quite well actually." she said almost pleasantly. Aside from the occasional argument about who to, and who should, deal with certain circumstances. "Strength in numbers after all. I'm sure you people know all about that."

"Strength?" Karla laughed? "Strength? You're lucky when you can convince all three of you to run in the same direction! That's not strength, stupid girl--that's lunacy. There's a reason a ship has only one captain and a Territory one Queen. You look at yourselves and call yourselves strong, just like you look at those fools cowering in shadows and call them brave. You are done. You all are. And when you're finally too broken to keep going, I'll make a pair of gloves from your hide."

Scent of Heather yawned, and then smirked. "You know what I just found interesting? You speak as if you were a Queen. When in fact, you are Umbrage's slave. You are the one who has been broken, not I."
