Detention, Depths of the Castle, Thursday

Another beautiful day had begun in Fandom, not that anyone in detention would have noticed. The lack of sunlight, the pleasant sound of Umbridge's voice, and the slightly stale smell of breakfast were all important aspects to making every day in detention routine! Surely everyone knew that surprises were no fun.

Look, the week was half over already and no one had been taken out and killed so far. That had to count for something, right?

"I'll keep that in mind." She eyed him closely and shook her head. "Trying to seduce you no good, either?" she asked. "That's generally the next tactic to you on a, what? Fifteen year old boy?"

Since he was going to be so cooperative about telling her what would and wouldn't work, Karla was happy to take him up on it!

"Pity. Might have been fun to try."

Tomorrow, there would be epic facepalming.

Fourteen, Karla. He was fourteen. "I already told you no thanks," he reminded her. "And you're the one who's all 'oooh no touchy, it's against the rules. Kinda puts a damper on the whole believability thing."

Fourteen? Karla was going to have to add a bleach bath to that facepalming later.

"That would be why I listed it as something I doubted would work very well," she said with an easy shrug. "I'd hate to waste your time and mine with tactics that don't have a hope in Hell of working."

"But it's so much more fun for me when you do," Alex retorted. "You'd catch more flies with honey, you know. Bring me some Pop-Tarts and an Xbox, and then we'll talk." No, they wouldn't.

"I'm not sure I'd get anywhere with that," Karla said thoughtfully. "You'd keep stringing me along with promises of getting somewhere while I continued to make Detention a much more comfortable place for you. Somehow, I feel like that would be counterproductive."

Political training, yo. You'd be surprised how often it came in handy.

"But I would have Pop-Tarts," was Alex's response. He made it sound perfectly reasonable.

Karla was almost tempted to concede, but for as reasonable as it sounded, Karla wasn't entirely sure Lady Umbridge would agree. "What have you done to deserve Pop-Tarts?" she asked. "If you just promised to behave, you could have all the Pop-Tarts and Xbox you wanted."

"But that would be lying," Alex told her. "Isn't that against your rules? Or is it only against your rules when you want it to be?"

"We could make sure it wasn't a lie," Karla offered, ignoring that question about lying. She was totally allowed to lie if it would bring people in line. "Lady Umbridge could make it so you never wanted to be bad again."

Just like Raven! Wasn't that an exciting prospect, Alex?

"I don't want to be 'bad' now," Alex told her, looking at her like he couldn't understand why she wasn't getting this. "That's why they tossed me in detention, hello?" Back to the sarcastic stage whisper. "You're the bad guys."

"Well, of course you'd say that," Karla said with an eyeroll. "Yes, yes, I know, I know. Fight the power, damn the man, et cetera and ad nauseam. We're the terrible, evil powers that be and even though you lot are spending just as much time blowing up buildings and the like, we're the bad guys."

"Well, we haven't brainwashed anyone, so yeah. I'd say you are," Alex agreed.

"Who's been brainwashed?" Karla demanded. "Just more of your lies and propaganda!"

"Like half of you?" Alex asked, like 'duh.' "Hawkeye ring a bell? And didn't you used to not be crazy and evil?"

"I used to be useless and pathetic," Karla snorted. "Perhaps you just don't understand what it's like to be effective."

"Effective sounds boring," Alex told her.

"Oh?" Karla asked with a laugh. "I see. And you are vastly more entertained down here? Do share!"
