Detention, Depths of the Castle, Thursday

Another beautiful day had begun in Fandom, not that anyone in detention would have noticed. The lack of sunlight, the pleasant sound of Umbridge's voice, and the slightly stale smell of breakfast were all important aspects to making every day in detention routine! Surely everyone knew that surprises were no fun.

Look, the week was half over already and no one had been taken out and killed so far. That had to count for something, right?

"Are you here to play, little witchling?" Loki asked, head cocked curiously as he watched her with the others.

Karla beamed at him. Another volunteer! How wonderful! "Indeed I am, godling. Which is probably for the best for you, no? You look so..."

Unruffled? Unhurt? Sane?

"...bored."

"They do not have wifi here," he informed her solemnly.

Karla made a face. "Ugh. And I'd thought the stories I'd heard about the food were the worst thing about this place."

Tilting her head, she gave him a curious look. "Level with me," she suggested. "You're not filled with the righteous fury that everyone else is. So why are you in here? In a room with no wifi or decent amenities." She gestured to the room at large. "Mother Night, you can't make me believe that you don't think you deserve better than this."

"Oh, I deserve many things," he replied, eyebrows knitting up in deep sympathy as though to mimic her. "I deserve to watch the flesh rot from your bones and the stones of this building turn to dust."

Karla didn't bat an eye at that. "Neither of those sound all that exciting," she said. "Though, I suppose, to each their own. Will you truly be content with sitting here until either of those happen, lacking both power and wifi?"

"Are you here to strike a bargain?"

"Possibly," Karla drawled. "I don't see any reason you should stay in here when you can be out on the winning side for once?"

Besides, like Umbridge's regime was all that different from some of the things his past-self had gotten up to. Honestly, now.

"Though, I'm sorry, flesh rotting from bones is going to have to be off the table for now. You know how it is, I'm sure."

The smile she received was beauteous. "And just what are the terms?"

"Fairly simple ones," Karla said, appreciating that, finally, there was someone down here who was intelligent enough to realize a good thing when he heard it. "You simply swear fealty to Lady Umbridge, vow to obey her and her rules in all things, and treat her with all the respect and reverence she deserves." She gave him a stern look with that. "Using her definitions of things like 'respect' and 'deserves,' of course."

Oh, Karla. What made you think you could bargain with the god of mischief?

"And in return?"

"Freedom," Karla said, spreading her arms wide. "No more Detention, no more horrible food. You'd have your run of the island, all the wifi you could want, everything! And once you graduated, you'd be free to leave and return to wherever you wished--or even stay and continue to be among the elite here."

"Elite? Truly?"

"Of course," Karla said. "Those of us with powers are naturally more highly regarded than the landens who serve Umbridge."

"Why of course I would gladly swear fealty for such high honors," Loki replied cheerfully. "Who would not?"

Karla was not entirely stupid and so gave him a frosty glance. "If you're so eager, than why have you not stepped forward to do so already?" she demanded. "I know you've already heard this spiel."

"Oh, but you were doing ever so well," Loki replied with another smile. "Do tell about the part where I may be elite again? I so wish that I had my Twitter account to share it."

Oh, the sour looks Loki was getting now. "I'm trying to make you an offer here," she snapped. "Not waste time amusing your idiotic little brain!"

Karla would like to assure you that she could have come up with better insults if half of her mind wasn't blanketed in pink fuzz.

"No, you come here offering trinkets to a god," he replied sweetly. "I thought you more clever than this when you spoke to my companions. Perhaps it was simply luck with them."

"I come offering trinkets to a godling," Karla corrected. "Here, you are nothing and less than that. You are bound here, powerless, just like the child whose body you wear." She sniffed. "By rights, the only thing I should be offering you is a poisonous snake and a bowl to catch the venom in. Perhaps that would lessen your arrogance some."

...Said the female threatening the god. Yes.

"I am not powerless," Loki replied calmly. He sat back, relaxed and in perfect control of himself. "You know a story mortals tell each other to teach a lesson about getting caught. Oh my. How will I resist falling to my knees and begging for forgiveness? I am Loki, son of Laufey. I am the greatest trickster known in all the nine realms. I will bring a fury down upon the world like none ever known. I know the virtue of patience. Do you?"

No. No Karla did not. Also, with any luck, she would later be able to get out of Loki's bad graces by explaining this as the most thorough trick of her life?

"So you'll just sit here and rot?" Karla asked. "In the hopes that one day, you'll manage to get out under your own power? You haven't yet and you've been here...how long?"

He looked down at himself. "Am I rotting, little witch? You make so many assumptions. You could learn much if you ceased talking and simply listened for a moment. I. Am. A. God. Do you think the lifetime of one witch is any more than the blink of an eye to me?"
