Detention, Depths of the Castle, Thursday

Another beautiful day had begun in Fandom, not that anyone in detention would have noticed. The lack of sunlight, the pleasant sound of Umbridge's voice, and the slightly stale smell of breakfast were all important aspects to making every day in detention routine! Surely everyone knew that surprises were no fun.

Look, the week was half over already and no one had been taken out and killed so far. That had to count for something, right?

Ice in her veins; Dinah closed her eyes. This-- wasn't a joke. Or if it was a double-agent thing, it was way too good. She opened her eyes and smiled. "Come in here, and tell me I need one, Karla. Face to face."

...Karla was going to have some serious apologizing to do tomorrow. Still, then as now, she'd consider it worth it.

"Is that an invitation to tangle, darling?" Karla asked. "I get to use my Craft now. It won't even be close to a fair fight." Her eyes closed as her hands flared blue. Ahhh, it did feel good to be able to use her Craft freely again. "But if you need a bit of incentive before you decide to listen, I'm more than willing to provide it."

A lot of apologizing.

"I said in here. Think you could take me without your magic? Or let me out there, see how Craft does against telekinesis and how very, very long I've had to think about this."

She would not grieve for Karla yet. Not yet. Not while she was standing in front of her. "I always listened. Did you ever listen to me? At all? ... If you had, you wouldn't be here."

Dinah watched the glow, and braced herself.

In Karla's defense, it was to get them all out of Detention! Wasn't a day of horribleness worth their freedom? Mother Night, Dinah. Way to hold grudges.

"I listened to you, Dinah," Karla crooned. "For three years, I listened to you. And what exactly did that get me? Betrayed. Craftless. Hungry. I lost friends. I lost lovers. And all for nothing. Lady Umbridge is going to win and I'm finally on the winning side."

"And now you've lost your sanity, your dreams, and your self by listening to that pink nightmare instead." Dinah's face hardened. "Or someone's got hold of your mind. C'mon, Karla. Fight. Damn you, I've never stopped. I won't believe you will."

Well. Not unless this didn't work, anyway.

"And as you batter your wings against the bars of the cage, I'm free to do as I please," Karla smirked. "Lady Umbridge finally explained everything to me. She's so right. I don't know why I wasted all that time before. She makes everything better, Dinah. Truly."

She looked up at one of the first friends she'd made in Fandom and, for once, let some real emotion bleed through. "You're my friend, Dinah. Let me help you. Don't you ever get tired of fighting?"

If she'd asked it the way Raven had, Dinah would have growled. But like this... "Of course I do." She didn't look at Karla. "But I don't believe any of her promises, Karla. And even if I did-- I won't let myself become a weapon against everyone else." She finally stared at the girl who she'd half thought of as a little sister, sometimes. When things weren't so bad. "I didn't think you would either." Please, tell me this is a scam.

Karla was going to so empathize with Daemon in about five or so years. Ouch.

"I don't want to be used as a weapon," Karla admitted, whispering as if she were confessing something bad. Her hands were pressed up against the barrier as if she could reach through and clutch Dinah tightly. "I don't want to hurt people. But so long as people keep opposing her, she's going to fight back. But you can end this, Dinah, don't you see? We don't have to keep fighting!"

"I see," Dinah whispered. She did. She should feel sorry for Karla. Pity her, for being broken.

But there were far more broken people on this side of the bars who needed help more.

"Don't ask me for anything, Karla." Dinah's face hardened. "You don't have the right any more. Either torture me for points with your Mistress, or leave me the hell alone."

Karla's face screwed up, eyes narrowing, jaw setting. Fine. That hadn't worked, she'd find something else that would.

"I tried to be nice," she hissed. "Because I loved you. Don't think that's going to last. The next time I decide to rattle your cage, birdie, you're going to wish you were in Hell."

"Already there," Dinah snapped back. Then smirked. "Come to the dark side, Karla. We have porridge."
