Detention, Depths of the Castle, Thursday

Another beautiful day had begun in Fandom, not that anyone in detention would have noticed. The lack of sunlight, the pleasant sound of Umbridge's voice, and the slightly stale smell of breakfast were all important aspects to making every day in detention routine! Surely everyone knew that surprises were no fun.

Look, the week was half over already and no one had been taken out and killed so far. That had to count for something, right?

"I'm not allowed to leave. I'm supposed to stay here," Sam said, shaking his head weakly before the rest of what she said sunk in. "Wait a second. What did you say?"

Karla looked puzzled. "I said that Peter's beside himself," she repeated. "What, you don't think he'd be concerned, knowing you're down here?" She shook her head at him, leaning over to try and clasp his hands. "Just because you two were on opposite sides, that doesn't mean he doesn't worry about you down here! He loves you no matter what!"

"He... we weren't..." Sam said, shaking his head even as he clasped her hands. "We were on the same side. I know he loves me, and I love him too. We never disagreed on anything."

And now back to the sympathy, adding just a touch of Craft to make sure he felt the emotions she was so expertly displaying. "Is that what they told you? Is that what they're trying to make you believe? I can't believe they're messing with your memories of him. He's going to be heartbroken when I tell him about this--he'd be here himself but it hurts him to see you like this."

Perhaps Karla would spin a web and create a shadow!Peter for Sam tomorrow. That might be fun.

"Yes," she continued gently but firmly. "You did disagree. And you were on opposite sides. But that didn't stop him from loving you, from trying to reach you. Don't you remember, Sam? Please tell me you remember!"

Look. There were even a few tears there to sell the story along!

Sam's emotions about Peter were easy to sway, but Karla's skills were making it difficult to question her. "He can't still love me. He's--" Sam started to say "gone" but was that true? It had been so hard lately to separate what was in his head and his heart, and what was really happening.

"Did I hurt him?" Was that why it hurt to talk to him sometimes? Did he not want to really be down here?

Well, if you were just going to hand her things on a plate, Sam...

"The important thing is that he's better now," Karla said, patting him. "And that he forgives you." She lowered her voice and looked around. "Is that why you're still here? Are you punishing yourself for--what you did?"

It wasn't that hard to break something that had already been broken...

"He's okay? He's not dead?" Sam asked quietly. "I'm not punishing myself. I...I'm not allowed to leave. No one is."

That didn't stop it from being fun.

"Of course he's still alive," Karla said, as if the very idea of it was preposterous. "Why wouldn't he be? You didn't hurt him that badly."

Yes. She'd definitely spin a tangled web of Peter tomorrow. Have him remain outside the barrier and wave to Sam.

"Who's been telling you he's dead?" Karla demanded. "That's a horrible thing to say! Why would someone try to get you to believe that?"

"I...I don't know. I was angry. I tried to hurt Umbridge," he said, those memories coming a little clearer. "That's why I'm here. That's why I can't leave. They said he was dead but I... I see him sometimes. He talks to me and I dream about him, but I thought he was gone."

"And he was hurt when you tried to do that," Karla said regretfully. "But he's gotten better. Umbridge helped him heal. Well, she didn't help, exactly, but she let him be taken to the clinic. It was pretty touch-and-go for a little while."

Karla knew better than to lay it on too thickly after all. Umbridge never would have dirtied herself helping to heal someone. That's what underlings were for.

"I think he died for a few seconds. But they brought him back." She paused and looked around. "Are they really dreams, you think? Or are people telling you that's what they were?"

"I think... people have told me I'm not really seeing him. Zoe does it a lot. I think it makes her sad because she doesn't see my dad." That totally made sense to Sam. "But the dreams are things we did together, old things. I miss him so much, and I just want things to be like they were before." Before detention or before Umbridge, as long as he had Peter with him.

"Sam...I think people might be misleading you," Karla said, keeping her voice low. "I can't say for sure, of course. I just got here. But I can't understand why people would tell you that he's dead when he's not. When he's alive and just waiting for you to come him."

"Are you lying to me?" Sam asked quietly. "I miss him so much and I want him to be okay. I want to be with him. What do you want from me?"

Dammit, Sam! You weren't supposed to pick up on that.

"Why would I lie?" Karla asked, looking hurt at the very suggestion. "I just want you two to be together! Think about it, Sam. I just got in here. It only makes sense that I would be more up to date on what's going on out there than Dinah or Zoe."

"It has been a while since any of us have been outside," Sam said sadly. "I think they'd be mad if I left detention. But I miss Peter."

"If you escaped, yes, but what if..." Karla paused, making it look like she was pondering his options. "What if you promised to be good? Promised to behave and rejoin Peter? Maybe then they'd let you out so you can be together again!"

Wasn't that a brilliant idea, Sam?

"Do...do you really think they'd let me out?" Sam asked. "I could be good if it meant I got to be with Peter." As an afterthought, he added, "Would they let Dinah out too? I can convince her to be good and she's been nice to me."

"Maybe if you were to convince she'd have to be very good," Karla said doubtfully. "They know they can trust you, because of how much you love Peter, but Dinah's less stable than you are."

Mother Night, that almost hurt to say, even through the fuzzy, pink warmth surrounding her brain.

"What if Dinah did something bad and they ended up punishing both of you again?"

Sam outright whimpered at that. "I don't want to be punished more. I want to get out of here." Was that selfish? That was probably selfish, but Sam couldn't bring himself to care at the moment.

"Then why don't you come with me?" Karla suggested. "We can both leave. You and me, right now. We'll go, we'll promise to be good, and then you can be with Peter again. The two of you have always been meant to be together, right?"

Okay, or he'd get Imperio'd and used against the Resistance, but once he was Imperio'd, it's not like he would care anyway.

Sam looked at Karla sadly before shaking his head. "I can't," he said, his voice cracking. "I--I can't leave Dinah and Zoe, I can't. Peter will understand, he will, he loves me, he will."

"I don't know..." Karla said sadly. "He just misses you so much. He says it hurts him to be without you. Every day you delay, it hurts him a little worse. Why do you want to keep hurting him, Sam? Why?"
