Detention, Depths of the Castle, Thursday

Another beautiful day had begun in Fandom, not that anyone in detention would have noticed. The lack of sunlight, the pleasant sound of Umbridge's voice, and the slightly stale smell of breakfast were all important aspects to making every day in detention routine! Surely everyone knew that surprises were no fun.

Look, the week was half over already and no one had been taken out and killed so far. That had to count for something, right?

"That's because this is a bad place," Karla said, kneeling down next to Cassidy and pulling her close. "This is a place the Darkness has abandoned. I'm worried about you. If you stay here much longer...you might be abandoned, too. And I couldn't live with myself if that happened. You're my Sister, a fellow Queen. How could I be forgiven if I left you here to rot?"

Cassidy nodded, letting Karla pull her close. How long had it been since she had seen or talked to the other Queen whom she had adored and looked up to so much? She couldn't remember. She couldn't remember exactly why she was here, either.

"No land and no Darkness," Cassidy murmured in agreement. At the idea of rot, she shuddered a little. "I do not want to be abandoned like that, Karla. The lands need its Queens." The Queens needed the land.

"It's a good thing none of your males are here," Karla said, shaking her head and feeding Cassidy warmth and comfort, building up her trust to overcome whatever suspicions she had left. "Do you know what they'd say to you? It would be just awful. Your father and brother would be furious. You know you need to be protected, darling."

Did she have males? Cassidy couldn't remember the details, but the things that Karla were saying did make sense. And Mother Night, it had been so long since she had felt warmth and comfort from anyone beyond these walls. It had been too long since she had experienced the nearness of someone from her world.

"They'd yell and fuss," she finally said. "It's a male's right to protect and defend his Queen." She brushed her hand against Karla's clothing. "Poppi would tell me how I wasn't careful enough and that I had to be kept safe."

"While giving you his best 'I'm so disappointed face'," Karla said, clucking her tongue. "You know the one I mean. And Clayton would be so angry, he'd probably rush right off and get himself into trouble. Probably hurt. Maybe even killed! And it would be your fault for being in here."

She stroked Cassidy's hair. "You know you're supposed to take care of your people, Cassidy. I know you do."

"I didn't mean it," she whispered, tears sliding down her cheeks. "I didn't mean to let him get hurt! I want to be a good Queen, Karla, I do. I want to take care of my people and the land like I'm supposed to."

Yesterday, Raven had used her fears against her and today Karla was using her own self confidence issues against her. It was just a wonderful week to be Cassidy, wasn't it?

Karla was just building upon the foundation Raven had left for her. Besides, she was a Black Widow, a mind-Healer. Healers were able to fix things so completely because they also knew how to tear apart. By the time she was done, Karla planned to have delicately flayed Cassidy wide open, removing all the parts that were bad and wrong and leaving only the power and the will to be led behind.

She would rebuild Cassidy in her own image and she would finally be beautiful.

"I should be angry at you, you know," she said, letting a little hardness creep into her tone. "Forgetting who and what you are--ignoring your responsibilities for this foolishness. I'm also very disappointed in you, Cassidy. What do you have to say for yourself."

Cassidy flinched at the hardness in Karla's voice and clutched at her clothing as the tears came faster.

"Don't be mad at me, Karla. Please don't be mad. I didn't mean to forget who I was, I swear by the Darkness that I didn't." She buried her face against Karla. "I'll do better, I promise. I'll be a better Queen."

Karla remained stiff and unyielding for a moment more, then allowed herself to relax. "I believe you," she whispered, patting Cassidy. "I understand--sometimes we forget ourselves, allow ourselves to be misled. I bet that's what happened to you, isn't it."

"I've forgotten some things and somewhere lost a little of myself, too. A lot of myself, I think, Karla." She swallowed, sniffling a little. "I want to find it and get it back, but I saw my tiger-eye turn to dust (http://fandomhigh.livejournal.com/3171101.html?thread=193158941#t193158941)."

Karla shook her head. "Those were lies sent to test you," she said. "Your Tiger's-eye is still there, just waiting for you to take it up again. But you can't do it from here. You have to leave this place, agree to take up your place as a proper Queen. Can you do that for me, Cassidy? Can you take up your Jewel and your duties again?"

"My Jewel didn't shatter?" The first small tendrils of hope started again at Karla's words. "I can still be a Queen?"

"You can," Karla promised. "But only if we get you out of here. I think it's time you left, don't you?"

"I want to get out, Karla," Cassidy nodded.

"Then let's go," Karla said, holding out her hand. "Come with me and promise to be good, okay? I'll take you up to see Lady Umbridge and then you can get your Jewel back and take care of the land."
