Detention, Depths of the Castle, Thursday

Another beautiful day had begun in Fandom, not that anyone in detention would have noticed. The lack of sunlight, the pleasant sound of Umbridge's voice, and the slightly stale smell of breakfast were all important aspects to making every day in detention routine! Surely everyone knew that surprises were no fun.

Look, the week was half over already and no one had been taken out and killed so far. That had to count for something, right?

K-Mart sat up against a wall, legs out in front of her. She was praying that she'd be left alone this week. It was looking good, but she knew that never meant anything.

She wasn't getting her hopes up terribly high. Every time she did that, they just got crushed.

When she made her daily rounds to detention in the morning, Raven paused by a girl she didn't recognize. This one she hadn't played with before.

"What is your name?" she asked, her voice almost kind.

"K-Mart," she replied, looking at Raven warily. Raven had never played with her before, but she knew who the other girl was. Knew what she could do. Maybe if she was civil and polite, Raven wouldn't go too hard on her.

Hah. Right.

Raven crouched down beside her. "And why will you not be good and promise to behave, K-Mart?" she asked, still deceptively kind.

"Because Umbridge is a liar," K-Mart said. "She's not giving people any kind of chance, she's not giving people any kind of purpose. She's just using people."

"To do that, you must respect Headmistress Umbridge and her rules," Raven said, gleefully drinking in K-Mart's unease. "This is your home now, and you must make the best of it. Your old home is gone. Otherwise they would have come to take you out of here."

Well, that made sense. In a way.

"But her rules aren't fair," K-Mart ventured. "They only benefit her chosen ones."
