Detention, Depths of the Castle, Thursday

Another beautiful day had begun in Fandom, not that anyone in detention would have noticed. The lack of sunlight, the pleasant sound of Umbridge's voice, and the slightly stale smell of breakfast were all important aspects to making every day in detention routine! Surely everyone knew that surprises were no fun.

Look, the week was half over already and no one had been taken out and killed so far. That had to count for something, right?

Might've been. Jono was definitely going to take it as such. He might not have had a mouth, but there was definitely a smile on his face, managing to reach the corners of his eyes.

//And if we ever get out of here, won't that be a sight to see?//

For what it was worth, he probably wouldn't ask her to knock birds from the sky, if they ever managed to escape.

"I would rather my time here did not involve much use of them," Liara admitted, "But I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel the inclination to towards our captors."

//I have to confess that I spent th'better part of the past three years telling myself just what I'd do to the people who put me here,// Jono agreed, his brow furrowing slightly. //If I ever do get th'chance, I haven't a clue if I'll take it, though. Tempting as it is to rearrange a few of their faces for them.//

If he got out of here, he could. That was the thing. He could level the whole bloody island, if he felt so inclined. Even with his affairs a little more in order than they'd been before, the prospect of stepping away from the power dampeners and into his own full capacity frightened him a little.

"I want to go home," Liara admitted. "My mother must miss me. But... if I ever leave here... I will have no regrets if I hurt them on my way out."

//Trust me, Sunshine, if they put up a fight,// and they will, //they won't know what hit them if th'lot of us get loose.//

They had a Hulk. That on its own made them virtually unstoppable.

//Home... That's th'place with the water? The one you showed me the other day?//

"Armali, Thessia," Liara said, nodding. She rubbed the back of her neck. "It is where I grew up."

//It's a beautiful place,// Jono offered, stuffing his hands into his pockets to keep from mimicking the gesture. Had he stepped into awkward conversation? He probably had. But... to hell with it. //I can definitely see why you'd want to go back there, especially after being stuck in this hole. Having a home like that t'go back to... if only most of us were so lucky.//

"I would prefer living somewhere quieter. My mother enjoys the crowds of Thessia, but... I got here because I was trying to start my career in archaeology early. I would spend most of my time out on desolate digs."

She hesitated briefly. "Is there something wrong with your home?"

//Desolate digs sound about my speed,// Jonothon decided. //I'm... not much of a people-person. Less than ever, these days.//

For some reason or other.

//And... London is fine, I suppose. There just isn't any place for me there. I left after my powers manifested, didn't think I'd ever look back. Trouble is, th'place I went to... Well, I'd gone to school. Not here, I mean. A special sort of school, for people with mutations that set them apart from baseline humanity. And even if I wasn't too old for that school now, I wouldn't go back there. Not with Emma Frost playing headmistress there.//

That would be the nice way of putting it.

"Emma... Frost?" Liara repeated dubiously. "She's... has she been here?"

She wasn't sure.

//She'd be th'one that comes down here and announces that we're all just throwing tantrums and should grow up and re-join society under Umbridge's rule immediately,// Jono replied, eyes narrowing a little. //Likes to pick on...//

He looked around for Jack, and then gestured vaguely in his direction once he spotted him.

//Likes to pick on him. Has very little in the way of manners when it comes to reading minds.//

"I can imagine you would not want to go back," Liara said. The description had rung a bell. "Is there nowhere better for you to go?"

//For th'likes of me?// Jono shook his head a little. //I have th'sort of face that you don't particularly want to wear in a crowd, luv. I lost the ability to live a normal life in my own world when I blew my jaw off. And... I'm afraid I've been down here too long to really know what else is out there. I'll manage, I'm sure. I always do. But for th'time being, everything is a bit up in the air.//

Which was fine. He still wasn't completely convinced he wouldn't be down here forever.

"You are always welcome in Armali," Liara said, wrapping her arms around her legs. "If we get out. No one would look at you strangely, outside of being curious about your species."

Jono tilted his head at her, and then found a place to sit nearby.

//You get quite the assortment of different sentient species out there, then?// It was intriguing. Hell, it was tempting. A different world entirely, where humanity and their loathing of mutants was a complete non-issue.

"Most people on Thessia are asari," Liara admitted. "But there are plenty of hub worlds with a large variety of species. And most asari are born from cross-species liaisons."

Re: Chat With Your Fellow Prisoners [07/26]

[identity profile] bloodyspitfire.livejournal.com 2012-07-26 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
//Cross-species?// That was... actually kind of fascinating, in its own way. That there was an entire race that took parts of its genetic makeup from other races. Jonothon couldn't help but feel curious as to whether they all still managed to look similar, or if they kept some features from their non-Asari parent, as well.

Maybe he'd find out later. Maybe.

//So I'd be a bit of a curiosity,// he mused, //but nothing particularly frowned upon, so long as I don't commit some sort of serious interplanetary faux-pas.//

Good to know.

Liara smiled. "I'm sure some would find you very interesting," she said. Considering the asari inclination to make babies with anything that looked new...

She rubbed the back of her neck again. "My species can produce offspring with any sentient being," she explained. "We feel doing so adds to the species. Purebloods like me are... well, it's complicated."

//I suppose 'complicated' is a universal constant,// Jono offered, idly drawing a squiggle in the dust on the floor. //So long as there are people involved, nothing is ever going to be simple.//
