Detention, Depths of the Castle, Tuesday

Another bright, shining, and pink day had begun for the ~~prisoners~~ guests being held in detention, and while the morning started off the same as the day before, there was a strange sort of feeling in the air once people began waking up. A kind of... musical feeling, in fact.

Umbridge might have taken over the island, but the island still had a mind of her own, thank you very much.

Cassidy was in too much pain to think about eating dinner.

Instead, after Elle finally left for the day, she found a corner and curled against the wall, her arms locked around her knees as tears slid down her cheeks. She wasn't even aware of the fact that she was singing at first.

figures up ahead
Moving in the trees
White skin in linen
Perfume on my wrist
And the full moon that hangs over
these dreams in the mist

Darkness on the edge
Shadows where I stand

On a watch with no hands

Zoe hated the way some of the students were left after their visitors had gone, and listening to Cassidy's song wasn't helping. She sat down next to her, far enough to not invade her space, but close enough that hopefully Cassidy would know she wasn't alone.

Cassidy was still afraid right now and still crying, but she thought she felt someone come near. She flinched a little, expecting to be hit again.

Her voice was still very soft, breaking only when she had to sing through a sob.

"Is it cloak 'n dagger
Could it be spring or fall
I walk without a cut
Through a stained glass wall
Weaker in my eyesight
The candle in my grip

Zoe frowned deeply, and put her hand gently on Cassidy's shoulder. "It's okay," she said softly. "You're safe now." Until tomorrow, at least.

Cassidy flinched when she was touched, but since no pain followed the touch, she turn to look and saw Zoe.

"I'll never be safe, not until she finally kills me or someone kills her."

"She's not going to kill you. We won't let her," Zoe said, doing her best to sound confident for Cassidy's sake. "This can't go on forever. I know it's hard to be hopeful."

Cassidy turned fully to her so that she wasn't being disrespectful by keeping her back to her.

"I scream and I scream, but no one stops her. I don't blame them because they know what they get could be worse. Today it was the worse that it's ever been and I screamed even more, but again, no one came to my aid." Her eyes were sad, not angry as she looked at Zoe.

"If she goes too far and starts to do so much damage that she's in danger of killing me, how do we know anyone will stop her when they know that Umbridge or Raven or one of the others can come down here and make my torture seem like nothing." Tears slid down her face. "I'm already fighting not to lose my mind because I'm cut off from everything that makes me what I am. I think it would almost be a kindness to let me die, even though I do not want to."

Oh Cassidy, you didn't need to be angry at Zoe, she was angry enough at herself. "I'm so sorry," Zoe said. "I wish there was more I could do to protect all of you. None of you deserve this, I want you to remember that. It would not be kind to let you die."

"You don't deserve this, either, Principal Winchester. She makes you suffer as much as we suffer."

"I didn't stop her. I should have--I thought I was setting a good example," Zoe said. "I should have gotten rid of her at the first sign of trouble. I suppose hindsight is 20/20 and all."

"You didn't know," Cassidy stressed softly. "How could you? How could anyone know that there was such evil in her that she could do what she has done?"

Zoe smiled softly. "I know we'd all like to think people can't be so evil. Especially people who were once our friends." Not that she thought Cassidy might understand that sentiment or anything.

"I never realized, I mean there were stories in my world, but I'd never seen it or experienced it like this."

"Someday, this will all seem like a terrible story," Zoe said. "I know that might be difficult to believe right now, but believing is all we have."
