Detention, Depths of the Castle, Tuesday

Another bright, shining, and pink day had begun for the ~~prisoners~~ guests being held in detention, and while the morning started off the same as the day before, there was a strange sort of feeling in the air once people began waking up. A kind of... musical feeling, in fact.

Umbridge might have taken over the island, but the island still had a mind of her own, thank you very much.

"Might not be the hottest selling point," April commented. "But London's cool. A kid I was talking to yesterday mentioned he's from Oklahoma. If I were him, I might as well just stay here."

//I've never been,// Jonothon mused. //So far as th'States go, I've only ever been to Massachusetts. And briefly. I hear it's a lovely state, but really... I can do without.//

Tap-tap-stomp. Tap-tap-stomp. Jonothon needed to come up with a different song.

"Well, Indiana's crap, I can tell you that much," April offered. "About as boring as this place but with worse weather. My guess is Oklahoma's about the same, but with tornadoes."

Or was that Kansas?

//Just what I never wanted. Tornadoes.// Tap-tap-fuck-it. Jono put the cutlery back onto the table and then slid them back April's way. //Someday, I'll find a place to go that isn't actively trying to kill me.//

April shrugged. "Grand Canyon's supposed to be nice."

//If you like giant holes in th'ground, I suppose,// Jonothon mused. //There are worse things to call natural wonders of th'world. Probably.//

Give him a minute, he'd probably come up with something.

And if April had been Frank, she would have launched into a scary-relevant song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcnBx4S-S5I).

But April was not Frank, so she just tilted her head in thought. "Waterfalls," she decided after a minute.

//Waterfalls? Not a fan of Niagara, then?//

For what it was worth, Jono had never actually been to Niagara.

"Nope," April said. "They're basically just lakes on hills. Boring."

She wasn't actually all that passionate about this view, but, eh. Might as well.

Eh, whatever made her happy. Conversation was an art form, and sometimes you had to just pick a stance and run with it for the sake of it.

//Haven't seen many of those in my lifetime, either,// Jono admitted. //Rivers, I've seen. There was that brief period after first coming here where I thought having easy access to th'beach could maybe be a big deal. Now... shite, I think I'd kill just to see th'sky again.//

Three years. He'd been down here three years.

Almost like she could read his narrative except clearly not very well, April asked, "How long's it been for you?"

//Too long,// came Jonothon's something-like-a-murmur of a reply. //Three years since I've been out of this room. I'll last a while yet, provided being locked away with the people who are somewhat out of touch with reality doesn't get to me.//

There was a long silence, then, before Jonothon shrugged his shoulders.

//It would be bad, if I let that get to me.//

He had a nuclear furnace where his chest was supposed to be. He was hanging on to his sanity for dear life.

"Hey," April said, tapping on the table with her plastic spork. "I find reality a lot easier to stay in touch with if you turn everything into black comedy."

Seriously, seriously black comedy, but.

//Trust me, luv, that's what's gotten me this far.// A beat. //That, and rage.//

He was too pissed off at Umbridge and her like to let them get to him, thanks.

"Rage works too," April agreed. "So I hear, anyway."

She didn't have too much experience with it herself, but, you know.

//Gives me something to hold on to,// Jonothon replied. //And apparently people are more prone to keeping their distance when you're shooting sparks. No idea why.//

"Sounds convenient. I can't pick that up through lots of meditation or anything, can I?"

//Only if you were born with a very particular variation of the X-gene. And then, only if you blow your face off.//

So it was a fairly inconvenient process.

"Eh," April said, touching her face thoughtfully. "I think I could pull off your look."

//I'd ask if you enjoy eating, but I've seen what they try to pass off as meals around here,// Jono mused. //I'd trade, but unfortunately, it doesn't exactly work that way.//

"Sucks," said April. "I'd kill for the accent."

//Now that one isn't up for trade,// Jonothon replied, looking almost vaguely amused. //But if we ever get out of here, spend some time in London. If you don't pick up on something, you're probably beyond help, luv.//
