Detention, Depths of the Castle, Tuesday

Another bright, shining, and pink day had begun for the prisoners guests being held in detention, and while the morning started off the same as the day before, there was a strange sort of feeling in the air once people began waking up. A kind of... musical feeling, in fact.

Umbridge might have taken over the island, but the island still had a mind of her own, thank you very much.

Now I find I’m wavering... Oh, hell." She took a huge bite of breakfast and tried not to gag.

Will we stay this way forever? Jack asked rhetorically. Sleepwalk through our lives' endeavor?

"I really am," he added around a mouthful of possibly-once-eggs, "starting to think we'll die here. And we won't even be lucky enough to die young."

Jack gave her a look. "No, but she hasn't slipped in five years. People stronger than either of us have died or been broken. I can't be an optimist."

The less we say about it the better, Jack sang at her. Make it up as we go along. Feet on the ground, head in the sky, it's okay I know nothing's wrong.

He shrugged. "Denial might be nice, if I could manage it."
