Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of large umbrellas set up for those who didn't enjoy a good pelting of various summer related materials. Because some people are weird like that.

There was also a splendid selection of food and beverages under a canopy to keep from ingesting suntan lotion. See? Your faculty thought of everything. Except how to make the island behave.

That you'll have to deal with.

Karla recognized Lex, even if she couldn't immediately place his name, but recognizing him was good enough for her purposes. "Kiss kiss," she said, strolling towards him, trying to look disapproving. "You've been here long enough to know the welcoming picnic tradition, haven't you?"

"Traumatising the new kids?" Lex asked, all innocence.

"That's less a tradition than it is a fact of life," Karla pointed out, trying hard to cling to that stern facade. It...wasn't working, no. "I'm referring to the tradition, the one that makes sure our picnics remain both memorable and visually enjoyable!"

"Interpretive dance?"

What, it could be a tradition?

And there went any chance at not grinning, yep.

"You know, I'd be willing to say yes if it meant I got to watch you dance your way through the picnic."

Lex grinned back. "It'd mean those years of dance lessons got put to some use."

"You know, I think you're onto something here," Karla decided. "Of course, there's no reason not to combine the new and the old tradition. Shirtless interpretive dance." She nodded. "Yes, I think that would be an excellent addition to every picnic."

"Yes, yes it would." Karla would note that Lex wasn't making any moves towards taking his shirt off. Yet.

Karla did indeed note that, with something akin to pouty dismay. Lex, why aren't you being a team player? Did you hate Fandom or something? She was willing to bet there was a perfectly fine chest under that shirt!

"I'm glad we agree," she said, raising a hopeful eyebrow. "Though it's obvious that someone has to start it. You know, you look like a male with obvious leadership qualities."

There was a fine chest, but one that happened to be redhead pale even if he wasn't a redhead any more.

Or as liable to burn for some reason, he figured he'd need to be on a desert island for a couple of months or something for that.

"Oh, me? Why didn't you say so?" Lex asked as mock comprehension dawned and he started unbuttoning his shirt..

"Well, I didn't want to just impose," Karla pointed out. "Though it would be a shame for you to ruin that perfectly nice shirt with popsicles and suntan lotion." Karla was dating a Worthington. She recognized expensive clothing when she saw it.

Granted, that was why he had an umbrella, but Karla was completely okay with ignoring the obvious to get her own way.

"If you're shirtless, you don't have to worry about that, at least. So, really, this whole idea is a win/win!"

Lex could also afford dry-cleaning for his expensive clothes. "I suppose I can't argue with that logic."

He could, but it was hot.

Dry-cleaning or strutting shirtless in front of many, many pretty girls. The better option was obvious!

"My logic is often flawless," Karla ~~lied shamelessly~~ assured him with a cheerfully appreciative grin. "And will be much appreciated by our fellow students, I'm sure."

Hey, Lex was equal opportunity with his strutting, thank you.

"I'm sure you're right." About the second part at least.

Even better! The more people who appreciated him strutting, the longer he was likely to continue to do so!

"The important thing here is that we've saved your shirt," Karla said, trying to sound selfless. "While upholding Fandom's rich history of tradition."

Selfless, right. Uh huh.

"And tradition is important."

HOW COULD HE DOUBT HER SINCERITY? DID SHE NOT LOOK THE SINCEREST?

"Very important," Karla agreed. "In fact, Petra and I pretty much decided that the reason Fandom sometimes plays nasty pranks is because there's not enough shirtless males. So, really, you're being a hero right now."

PERHAPS KARLA HAD NOT MET LEX'S DAD? WHO COULD RUN A MASTER CLASS IN FAKING SINCERITY!

"So you're saying we should blame the guys still wearing shirts during the next bout of weirdness?"

KARLA WOULD LOVE TO MEET LEX'S DAD ONE DAY! SHE POLLED WELL WITH PEOPLE'S PARENTS, REALLY!

By 'great' the narration meant 'horribly.' So if Lex ever wanted to discomfit his father for a moment or two...

"Absolutely," Karla said, shaking her head sadly. "I don't think they realize just the danger they are to us all." Which was why Karla and Petra were doing their level best to educate as many males as possible. To keep people safe.

It wasn't Lex's dad being discomforted that he was worried about.

"How truly selfish of them." Wanting to wear clothes.

"It's a sad, sad day when people can't be convinced to take their shirts off for the greater good."

"Simply tragic," Lex agreed. Solemnly. Yep. That.

They were indeed the solemnest.

Karla wiped away an imaginary tear. "Which is why I need to thank you again from the bottom of my heart, that you're willing to do this. To uphold tradition and keep us safe at the same time."

Lex still had enough self-respect not to pose heroically. Just barely.

Aww, and here Karla would have clapped and cheered for him if he had.

"I should head off and try to convince others of their civic duty," she said, grinning broadly even without the pose. "You make a wonderful--" and again with the cheerfully appreciate glance at his chest "--model to point to. Err, role model. I meant role model."
