Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of large umbrellas set up for those who didn't enjoy a good pelting of various summer related materials. Because some people are weird like that.

There was also a splendid selection of food and beverages under a canopy to keep from ingesting suntan lotion. See? Your faculty thought of everything. Except how to make the island behave.

That you'll have to deal with.

"I really didn't bring any other pairs, so these ones are probably going to take a lot of damage until I settle," Evan agreed, giving his feet a little wiggle. "I'm used to some pretty weird stuff going on in the schoolyard thanks to my last school, but usually it just made a tree grow for us to sit in the shade of. The sunblock is new."

As far as Evan was aware, Krakoa couldn't cough up sunscreen. But then, he could be wrong.

Petra didn't understand that whole sentence, so she just sort of brushed it aside. "Yeah, one of my friends, Toby? You might see him around. He only brought one pair of shoes and then some asshole stole them this one weekend everybody was crazy and he had to wear my sneakers for like a week. Just, you know. As a heads up."

"Watch my shoes," Evan replied dutifully. There was even a little nod of his head to show that he'd made the mental note. "Got it."

Because of the shoe-stealing epidemic. Shoes were a hot commodity around here, maybe?

"I'm Evan, by the way."

"Petra," Petra said, twirling her parasol. "Petra West." The shoes thing had only happened once as far as she knew, but it couldn't hurt. "And watch out for the gremlins, too. Anybody tell you about them yet?"

Evan shook his head a little bit in response to that.

"Not here, no, though my last school had an infestation of Bamfs that kind of kept us all on our toes. Are the gremlins here like that? Just into everything, full of mischief?"

Oh, Evan. You should be so lucky.

Now Petra was kind of wondering if he was an alien, because what was a bamf? But it would be rude to ask. And could aliens be named Evan?

"Kind of," she said, "but they also have hallucinogenic venom and like to bite. I think we made them the school mascot to try to pacify them or something, but it clearly didn't work."

Evan just came from a special, special place, Petra. Fake Kansas by way of a test tube, specifically, but it wasn't like he knew that. Westchester was the next best option.

"Yeah, I haven't ever been Bamf-bitten," Evan noted. "And I wouldn't want to be. I don't think they'd cause hallucinations, mostly it's because you just never know what they've been chewing on." Ew. "So if I see something that looks like the school mascot, I avoid it, huh?"

"Yep," Petra confirmed. "But the deer are harmless. They're just teal."

"I'm probably the last person who should go worrying about something just because of the color it is," Evan decided with a wry little smile. "I think if I saw a dear that was kind of bluish-green, I'd probably just be worried that it was sick or something. But they're actually that color? Really?"
