Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of large umbrellas set up for those who didn't enjoy a good pelting of various summer related materials. Because some people are weird like that.

There was also a splendid selection of food and beverages under a canopy to keep from ingesting suntan lotion. See? Your faculty thought of everything. Except how to make the island behave.

That you'll have to deal with.

"Nah," Petra said, waving that off. She figured the other girl could do with a bit of someone acting like this was all normal at the moment. Even if she was blue. "I just thought, who comes to boarding school expecting rain of popsicles on their first day? Not me. You should have been here yesterday--or, actually, you shouldn't have, it was literally hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk." She paused, then asked, "Do you know what those things are? Just checking!"

"I'm aware of what eggs are," Liara said. She was too shell-shocked to sound too offended. "But the popsicles are... new. As is your species."

"Wow, really?" Petra asked. She pretty much took most of this in stride by now, but, "That's different, I think. Well, welcome to Earth, where the locals are humans. I'd say we come in peace, but, uh, we're already here."

"Yes, I'm very grateful none of you have attacked me," Liara offered. "It would have made the experience even more unpleasant than it has been so far." Beat. "Not that I think your people are unpleasant!"

"Yeah, we--" Petra was just sort of stunned and floundering now, because wow, that was a statement right there. "We don't really make a habit of attacking new students. Is that, like, a common thing where you're from?"

"Some species are friendlier than others upon first contact," Liara said, still sounding flaily. "And I haven't learned the proper protocols yet."

And one day her humanity was going to come bursting in and get into a war with the turians. Not that she knew that.
