There were plenty of large umbrellas set up for those who didn't enjoy a good pelting of various summer related materials. Because some people are weird like that.

There was also a splendid selection of food and beverages under a canopy to keep from ingesting suntan lotion. See? Your faculty thought of everything. Except how to make the island behave.

That you'll have to deal with.

Aaaand once again while talking to Topher, Ace wasn't sure whether she should be insulted or not. Normal wasn't a word that got applied to her often enough for Ace to be sure if she liked it.

"Thanks? I think. But who cares if she's a girl? Unless you're looking to chat her up for a date or something, what's it matter?"

"Ew! No. I have a... thing." Not a condition. A person-he-was-maybe-dating. Though from his aghast tone that might be a little difficult to discern. "It's just, you know, girls are frequently gross."

If he'd said stupid or weak or something, Ace would've had some leverage to punch him in the face, but she couldn't get hacked off at something a first-year would say.

"Funny, you don't look twelve." She rolled her eyes. "Think of it this way: she's an alien. For all you know her species has fifteen genders and reproduces by Morris Dancing. Maybe she only looks like a girl."

Topher paused and considered that, tilting his head in thought. "Huh. There is that." He jabbed a finger in Ace's direction. "You," he said, "are full of constructive thoughts."

Beat.

"Also destructive ones," he said, recalling their final in Kennedy's class, "but the good kind."

Seriously. United, they might blow up the entire island.
