Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of large umbrellas set up for those who didn't enjoy a good pelting of various summer related materials. Because some people are weird like that.

There was also a splendid selection of food and beverages under a canopy to keep from ingesting suntan lotion. See? Your faculty thought of everything. Except how to make the island behave.

That you'll have to deal with.

"Mmm hmm." She was right but he wasn't going to acknowledge that. "I take it from your sunny disposition that Alec hasn't cornered you yet?"

"No." She was yet to decide whether she'd have preferred to keep it that way. On one hand, she was vauely curious. On the other, it sounded like a hassle. "Unless he was disguised as a popcicle and tried falling on my head."

"He is disguised as a pale person wearing a sweater in the summer," Jace said. "Except it's not a disguise it's just how he dresses all the time."

Natalie should probably have sympathized, as she was usually a pale person wearing a hoodie in most kinds of weathers. But the two weeks in the tents meant she'd actually managed to tan a little bit, and the heat had her in a t-shirt, so.

"So I should keep an eye out for someone suffering from a heatstroke?"

"Basically," he said, smiling. "He won't show his runes in public. Technically he's in the right about that but it's really damn hot so I don't mind bending the Law a bit for comfort."

The runes meant absolutely nothing to most people, after all. Not that she didn't see the value in being careful regardless.

"I explained that bit to him. Not showing the runes is mostly a predatory thing. Rogue Downworlders will think we're only human until they see the Marks, which is useful when hunting them down," Jace explained. "But it isn't important here seeing as nobody but you knows what a Shadowhunter is."

Well, Toby probably knew also but it wasn't from Jace explaining it like he had with Natalie.

"I feel so special," Natalie deadpanned. "It's not really something I use to break the ice with in conversations, no."

You know, all those conversations she had with people who weren't Jace or Sam or Tara. Those ones.

"You should feel special," Jace said. "I broke the Law telling you what I was. I could have my Marks stripped for it if it gets out. But I trust you."

Which was good for Jace because that might have been a sign he was maturing emotionally. Not especially good for Natalie considering when Jace decided to trust someone he got clingy and possessive.

Well, it wasn't an important relationship for Natalie unless there was something messed up about it. It was just a rule.

"Mm." She paused taking a sip from her drink, which was getting less and less cool. "Well, I'm glad."

"Well it is a prestigious honor," he said with a nod. "Don't worry too much about Alec. Not that I think it would show if you were."

He wasn't wrong there. "I generally have bigger things to worry about than other people's family," Natalie said

And speaking of things that might make her nervous in a way she'd keep entirely to herself... "Anyway. Coming to see the summer showcase tomorrow?"

"The summer what-case now?" He didn't pay attention to radio.

Natalie was not surprised.

"Summer showcase," she repeated, with something approaching patience. "At the Boards, tomorrow night. Various kinds of performances."

"And you will be performing, I take it?" Jace asked. "Is it something tawdry--no, wait, don't tell me. I want it to be a surprise."

Natalie rolled her eyes. She might not have been Envy yet, but there was still enough pride in there to object to the whole notion of anything she did ever being tawdry.

"Yeah. I'll be performing."

"Well then I'll be there." Jace wasn't the biggest fan of live performances, but it would be the brotherly thing to do. "I'd invite you out to watch me perform one day, but there's a chance of death with what I do."

"Also I'm not interested in it," Natalie pointed out. Anything that involved killing things wasn't really her cup of tea. "No offence."

"None taken," he said. "My sister Isabelle has the action chick thing down to a fine art so I would call on her if I wanted to engage in some violent family bonding."

"Good that you have that covered." She got enough of that world by living with a necromancer and his ghosts and tendency to come home with his hand bleeding. "I can handle non-violent things."
