Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Well.

It was raining popsicles and suntan lotion today. Because Fandom liked to make the newbies cry sometimes. Yes, the island had a sense of humor about these things.

We've all learned to accept that and move on with our lives. Well, all of us except for Britta. But she's the worst.

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Juliet sauntered up in a sundress, wide-brimmed straw hat on her head to deflect the sunscreen and popsicles. She carried a gift basket in both hands, stocked with the essentials: A map of the island,a pre-paid cell phone, a small box of chocolate, condoms, and a blue-and-gold Go Gremlins! t-shirt.

Stannis's attire made her hesitate the slightest bit, but the moment quickly passed.

"Hi," she said, plunging in anyhow. "I'm Juliet. I'm supposed to help you get settled and answer any questions you have! To start with, this is for you."

And there she offered him the basket.

Well, Juliet, there was one thing in that basket Stannis would actually be grateful for.

No, it wasn't the condoms.

Stannis eyes Juliet a little warily as he took the basket and peered in at all the strange things. "What is it?" he asked.

"Different things people need," Juliet said, undaunted. "The paper is a map of the island so you don't get lost. The phone is in case you're from a place without them. The, um, rubbers are for ... protection. The t-shirt's for school pride, and the chocolates are just yummy."

It was a basket, Stannis. Stop glaring at it.

But he had it narrowed down to two things that he couldn't quite identify as which the rubbers might be.

"Protection from what?" he asked, thinking something very, very, very different than what the answer was likely to be.

Um. Juliet fiddled with an earring and looked at the ground before answering.

"You know, like, if you meet someone and you want to be ... intimate, you use that so you don't catch anything or make a baby. "

Juliet was so not qualified to teach sex ed.

Stannis staring Juliet down while she tried to explain probably didn't help matters, either. His eyes narrowed a little bit. "The ultimate reason to be intimate with another person," he informed her, "is to conceive a child. What sort of man do you take me for?"

His brother?

"The kind who's in high school?" Juliet said, and did not roll her eyes because that stare had been almost intimidating. "I wasn't trying to be offensive, promise. How old are you, anyhow?"

Because that "conceive a child" thing sounded like he was about ninety.

Guess again.

"Ten and four years," Stannis answered, and he grunted, faintly, as he cast another disapproving look down at the basket. "I do not think I will have hardly any use for any of this, though I suppose I should thank you for the thought. The map is good, though; that is one of the first things I was hoping to procure once I found my footing here on this island."

"You're welcome," Juliet said. She had some practice at taking the sweetness from a backhanded compliment and ignoring the sting. "I marked the important places -- the dorm, the ice cream shop, the school, Demon Marcus, and the general store."

[identity profile] thelobsterking.livejournal.com 2012-07-02 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Three out of five important things weren't bad. But, then again, Stannis wasn't entirely sure what an ice cream shop or Demon Marcus was. He had set the basket down and was now unfolding the map. "And where might one find weaponry provisions, if needed? Or assistance with healing? I assume there's a dock. Yes, there it is. Good."

Wow this Stannis guy was intense.

"The clinic is here," Juliet said, trying to be helpful as she tapped at the map. "That's healing. Weapons, um ... I think the shop is somewhere around here."

She tapped the block Wellspring Arms was on, though she didn't know the exact address. Nor did she know it didn't so much sell weapons, as she'd never had a reason to find out.

"Oh, and the theater's here! There's a revue tomorrow that I'm in."

Stannis was the show-going type, right?

Stannis grunted a little, still looking at the map for a moment longer before rolling it up before Juliet decided to show him anything else. "I suppose," he mused, "I would be obligated to come see you in return for you assistance in...'getting settled,' as you put it."

[identity profile] twintuitionist.livejournal.com 2012-07-02 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
"You don't have to," Juliet said, managing modesty for about five seconds before she gave it up. "But ... it'd be really nice of you. And it'd give you a chance to meet people and see what the island is like and everything. So, you should. It'll be amazing."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2012)

[identity profile] thelobsterking.livejournal.com 2012-07-02 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, as soon as Stannis associated going to the...revue almost as if compensation for the gift basket, it was a done deal. Wild horses wouldn't be able to drag him away.

"If anything," he said, "it would perhaps be a good way to relax after giving the island a proper exploration."

[identity profile] twintuitionist.livejournal.com 2012-07-02 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
"Perfect!" Juliet beamed at him., then realized she'd meant to tell Stannis a few other things before she sent him on his merry way. "Oh, before you explore, you should know this place is weird, magic and aliens and superpowers are real so don't argue with whatever people tell you about themselves, sometimes people turn into little kids or dogs or whatever ... um ... it's 2011, and ... oh, most people are super-friendly. You'll be fine!"

Because that was what Stannis wanted. The super-friendly.

Stannis sort of lost Juliet a little bit after aliens, and he struggled to really make sense of much else after that. He understood the words, of course, but their meaning seemed to slip right over his head, and his face probably said as much. He frowned for a moment before responding.

"And I clearly have some local dialects to grow accustomed to," he noted, though he sounded a little reluctant. He would try to learn, but he highly doubted he would go as far as adopting any of it.

[identity profile] twintuitionist.livejournal.com 2012-07-02 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Maybe," Juliet said, and frowned, and made an effort to slow her speech. "What language do you speak at home?"

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2012)

[identity profile] thelobsterking.livejournal.com 2012-07-02 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
"The language we are speaking right now," said Stannis, "though your own speech...as well as the speech of those I encountered on the bus...is littered with phrases that make no sense. I don't suppose you have heard of Westeros; I had no idea that I was being flung so far from it."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2012)

[identity profile] twintuitionist.livejournal.com 2012-07-02 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Juliet shook her head, looking concerned. "Sorry," she said. "Not that I'm that great at geography, but I've never even heard of Westeros. This is the United States, and we call what we're speaking English."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2012)

[identity profile] thelobsterking.livejournal.com 2012-07-02 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Stannis started grinding his teeth a little; considering how long he'd gone in the conversation without doing so so far, they were doing fairly well.

"One young man on the bus went so far as to suggest it was on another planet, but that seems absolutely absurd."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2012)

[identity profile] twintuitionist.livejournal.com 2012-07-02 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Why?" Juliet asked, puzzled. "I would think it was cool, being on a different planet. I'm just from New York. I can get home in like five hours if I have to."

It wasn't at all exotic.

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2012)

[identity profile] thelobsterking.livejournal.com 2012-07-02 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
"And I apparently have to travel through time and space," noted Stannis bitterly. "Do you realize that, if I am truly so far removed from Westeros, how long it would take to get a raven back home?"

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2012)

[identity profile] twintuitionist.livejournal.com 2012-07-02 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Probably a long time, but why would you be sending birds around?" Juliet still wasn't getting the bad of this. At all.

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2012)

[identity profile] thelobsterking.livejournal.com 2012-07-02 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Because it's usually much quicker and a bit less likely to be intercepted than sending a messenger," Stannis explained, as if explaining that water was wet.

[identity profile] twintuitionist.livejournal.com 2012-07-02 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, right! But here you could just use a phone," Juliet suggested. "There's one in your basket -- the silver thing. It has time on it and everything."

Give her a minute, or a dozen, and she might figure out why that wouldn't work.
