Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Well.

It was raining popsicles and suntan lotion today. Because Fandom liked to make the newbies cry sometimes. Yes, the island had a sense of humor about these things.

We've all learned to accept that and move on with our lives. Well, all of us except for Britta. But she's the worst.

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

"You don't have to," Juliet said, managing modesty for about five seconds before she gave it up. "But ... it'd be really nice of you. And it'd give you a chance to meet people and see what the island is like and everything. So, you should. It'll be amazing."

Nope, as soon as Stannis associated going to the...revue almost as if compensation for the gift basket, it was a done deal. Wild horses wouldn't be able to drag him away.

"If anything," he said, "it would perhaps be a good way to relax after giving the island a proper exploration."

"Perfect!" Juliet beamed at him., then realized she'd meant to tell Stannis a few other things before she sent him on his merry way. "Oh, before you explore, you should know this place is weird, magic and aliens and superpowers are real so don't argue with whatever people tell you about themselves, sometimes people turn into little kids or dogs or whatever ... um ... it's 2011, and ... oh, most people are super-friendly. You'll be fine!"

Because that was what Stannis wanted. The super-friendly.

Stannis sort of lost Juliet a little bit after aliens, and he struggled to really make sense of much else after that. He understood the words, of course, but their meaning seemed to slip right over his head, and his face probably said as much. He frowned for a moment before responding.

"And I clearly have some local dialects to grow accustomed to," he noted, though he sounded a little reluctant. He would try to learn, but he highly doubted he would go as far as adopting any of it.

"Maybe," Juliet said, and frowned, and made an effort to slow her speech. "What language do you speak at home?"

"The language we are speaking right now," said Stannis, "though your own speech...as well as the speech of those I encountered on the bus...is littered with phrases that make no sense. I don't suppose you have heard of Westeros; I had no idea that I was being flung so far from it."

Juliet shook her head, looking concerned. "Sorry," she said. "Not that I'm that great at geography, but I've never even heard of Westeros. This is the United States, and we call what we're speaking English."

[identity profile] thelobsterking.livejournal.com 2012-07-02 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Stannis started grinding his teeth a little; considering how long he'd gone in the conversation without doing so so far, they were doing fairly well.

"One young man on the bus went so far as to suggest it was on another planet, but that seems absolutely absurd."

"Why?" Juliet asked, puzzled. "I would think it was cool, being on a different planet. I'm just from New York. I can get home in like five hours if I have to."

It wasn't at all exotic.

"And I apparently have to travel through time and space," noted Stannis bitterly. "Do you realize that, if I am truly so far removed from Westeros, how long it would take to get a raven back home?"

"Probably a long time, but why would you be sending birds around?" Juliet still wasn't getting the bad of this. At all.

"Because it's usually much quicker and a bit less likely to be intercepted than sending a messenger," Stannis explained, as if explaining that water was wet.

"Oh, right! But here you could just use a phone," Juliet suggested. "There's one in your basket -- the silver thing. It has time on it and everything."

Give her a minute, or a dozen, and she might figure out why that wouldn't work.

Stannis looked to the basket and located the...phone (and now knew for sure which were the devices for sexual protection), and he lifted it up. He gave it a shake, tapped it, and turned it over a few times.

"Why?" asked Stannis. "Does it fly faster than a raven? Where are its wings?"

"No, it stays in one place. It's, um, sound waves that go through the air." Look, like Juliet was a physicist?

She had, however, programmed the phone for Stannis with a few key numbers -- the school office, Ching Tai, and of course herself. She reached to take it from him, then poked at it until the address book came up before pointing to her own picture.

"Look. Touch this, and my phone will ring, and then we could talk. Even if I wasn't right here."

Having the device taken from him earned Juliet a small glare, but he was attentive when she demonstrated, dedicatedly trying to process it all.

"What kind of magic is this?" he asked, after a long while of realizing that this was the only explanation he could think of.

"It's not, it's just technology," Juliet said, with a tiny, triumphant smile as she let Stannis have his phone back. She didn't get to be smarter than anybody very often. "I, um ... could probably find a book about how they work, if you really want to know."

[identity profile] thelobsterking.livejournal.com 2012-07-02 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes," said Stannis, his attention almost entirely on the phone as he tried to replicate Juliet's actions with it, adding a distracted, "please. That would be wise."

And then he found her name on the phone, pushed the button she had indicated, and waited to see what would happen.

There was a quiet moment, then Juliet's red quilted handbag began to make what probably sounded like a dreadful tinny clamor.

I'm on the floor, floor
I love to dance
So give me more more, till I can't stand
Get on the floor, floor
Like it's your last chance
If you want more, more
Then here I am...

Juliet plucked her phone out triumphantly, hit the Answer Call button. "Hi Stannis," she said into the phone. "How are you?"

And then she had to giggle.

"I thought--" Stannis started to talk to Juliet and then remembered the whole point was to test out the phone, so he cleared his throat, mimicked her position with her own, and spoke into that, feeling like quite the fool as he did so.

"I thought you said it would ring."

"It did," Juliet said, before she figured out what Stannis meant. "Oh, the song? That's my ringtone. You can change them so you can tell which phone is yours and express your personality and stuff."

She squinted over toward him. "I think i just left yours as the default. Want me to call you so you can hear what it sounds like?"
