Philosophy of Choice [Monday | Period 1]

"Choose," Ronan said. Behind him, in the Danger Shop created hallway, were two doors, identical save for a word on each: "yes" on one and "no" on the other.

Stepping back, Ronan gestured at the doors. "Choose," he repeated.

[OCD up!]

She shook her head. "I'm sorry. I was thinking out loud."

She gave him a smile before reaching for the No door.

Ah, well, in that case...

Have more doors, Cassidy: "Chartreuse" or "Aquamarine"?

Cassidy had no idea what Chartreuse was, so she reached for Aquamarine.

Behind the aquamarine-labeled door was an aquamarine hallway... with two doors. This time, she had the choice between "Strange" and "Charm".

It took her a few more moments to choose here than it had when she had chosen Aquamarine. Biting her lip again, she ran a hand through her hair -- and then pulled her Tiger-Eye shield around her. He hadn't said that they couldn't use their own powers in this exercise, so she didn't feel guilty.

Besides, the chewing out she would receive from others for not shielding herself sooner would be much worse than getting a bad grade in class.

Shield in place, she reached to open the Strange door.

Funnily enough, on the other side of 'Strange' were two more doors!

I'm sure you're shocked, Cassidy.

This time, they were labeled "Whither" and "Thither".

Cassidy sighed at seeing two more doors. Shaking her head, she peered at them and then opened the Thither door.

Through thither, Cassidy would find herself facing doors labelled "North" and "South".

Cassidy was trying hard not to let go of her own patience and optimism, but she was really tempted to curse when she kept finding nothing but more doors.

Biting back her annoyance, she chose the door marked South.

The next hallway offered Cassidy "Rocks and trees" and "Trees and rocks".

Cassidy shook her head. "Every door just leads to more doors. What happens if I won't choose a door and try to just go back to the beginning?"

Sadly, no answer was forthcoming; Cassidy still had the doors in front of her, and nothing else changed.

Cassidy muttered something that was probably not very ladylike and reached for the Trees and rocks door.

This time, Cassidy's choices were, "Mountain high" and "Valley low".

Cassidy had about had just enough of this.

She reached for the Mountain high door and opened it. However, instead of going through the door, she also opened the second door and went through that instead.

That door now led... to another hallway.

Cassidy's doors now read "River Deep" and "River Wide".

"No more."

She didn't care if she got a bad grade, she wasn't going through any more new doors.

Muttering under her breath, Cassidy turned back to make her way back to the beginning. Even Cassidy had her patience limits and this was clearly the end of hers.

Luckily, she didn't have to go back to the beginning; walking back through the door she'd just walked through took her to a meadow.
