William had been flipping through medical journals when he came across an article on concussions. It started out as an interesting enough read, but as he went on, a knot began to twist in his stomach.
"You havin' fun, huh? Huh?" His father was drunk again, and angry. He was always so angry... William scrambled out of the way, hiding behind the door and watching as his mother yelled back.
"Don't you touch him! You're drunk! I'm going to take him, and we're leaving. Go on, go on and hit me!"
The next thing he knew, there was a sharp crack as he saw his mother crumple to the ground, head knocking against the fireplace.
And then the next day, finding her in the water... A concussion could cause dizziness, headaches, disorientation- if his father hadn't hit her, she never would've fallen like that. He'd always suspected that his father's actions had something to do with his mother's death, but now he knew.
Being right was usually a comforting feeling. This time? Not so much.

I'm still not sure what to think about the fact that TV canon changed things so that the (physical) abuse didn't actually happen.
