Library, Friday [05/18]

The great thing about working in the library was that Billy could look at whatever books he wanted, and not feel weird about just wandering through the shelves looking for something interesting. Today, he had an introductory book on sign language, just for fun and to see if he could learn anything in a day. So far, he was getting the alphabet down pretty well.

Hey. Hey, Billy. Guess who had brought cupcakes for you today. Go on, guess.

"Hey."

"Hi!" Billy said, breaking into a dorky grin almost immediately upon sight of Topher. It was funny how that worked. "You came."

"You requested cupcakes," Topher reminded him, dragging a chair up to Billy's desk and plopping down in it. "So... cupcakes."

Yep. There they were. All... cupcakey.

...They were decorated with the Ratman logo for some reason. The guy at J,GOB had been in a weird mood.

"Oh my god, nerd cupcakes. These are awesome!" Billy said laughing. "Would it be weird if I said just seeing you is nice, even without the sugar?"

"Yes," Topher said solemnly. "Very weird. You might be the first one."

It was true, Billy. You were a huge weirdo.

"For that, you get two cupcakes." Wasn't it a good thing he'd bought three?

"Awww, you're too nice. I'll totally settle for a cupcake and a half," Billy said. "So, how's it going?"

Topher thought about that. "Okay," he decided. "The island hasn't messed with us in a while, which is good, and Local College last night was awesome, so... yeah. You?"

"Pretty good. I have a whole library at my disposal," Billy said. "And the new librarian is kind of amazing."

Topher's eyes lit up. "Is it a robot?"

Topher, not everyone cool was a robot.

"No, although that would be amazing too. He's an orangutan!" Billy said. "But a well-read one, I guess."

...

"I'm trying to decide if that's cooler than a robot," Topher explained.

"Well, I don't know if much of anything is cooler than robots." See, this was part of why they worked so well together.

"Except superheroes," Topher added. "Of course."

SHUT UP HE WAS NOT BLUSHING.

"Oh, well, obviously," Billy said with a grin. "Especially our favorite superheroes."

Nerds, the both of them.

"This guy Wiccan's pretty awesome," Topher offered. "Did you know he has a flying disk thing?"

And now it was apparently Billy's turn to blush. "Yeah, I heard about that. He's not a superhero yet though. But I think he's working on it."

Topher raised his eyebrows. "I've seen his costume," he informed Billy. "It's all... superheroey."

So there, Billy.

"Spandex does not automatically equal superhero," Billy said. "Sometimes it just means being uncomfortable, yet aerodynamic."

"Yeah, but usually it's lame," Topher pointed out. "Like on joggers. Superheroes are the exception."

He'd clearly given this some thought.

"Well, we make sure it looks hot. I mean, they do. Superheroes. Not regular people," Billy said quickly.

"You said 'we'!" Topher announced. "You admit to -- superhero-ness!"

Which meant Topher won! Or something.

"I want to be a hero. That's about the only thing I can think of doing when I graduate. Is that weird?" Billy asked.

Topher gaped. "Seriously?" Oh, Billy, you giant nerd. "No, that's not weird, that's -- I mean, okay, it's weird, most people don't... but it's freaking awesome, too. And badass. Like Tony."

For a moment, Topher wondered if that made him one of those superhero-girlfriends he always saw in movies -- then promptly blushed and resolved not to think about that anuy longer. Ew.

"You think I'm kind of like Tony?" Congratulations Topher, that was just about the nicest thing you could have said to Billy. "Well, I think you're as smart as he is, so you can totally do something heroic with your life too."

Oh, sure, Billy. Say that. When Topher grew up and almost ended the world, any guilt he might be feeling right before blowing himself up would be all your fault.

Topher ducked his head. "Yeah?" Huh. "I don't know. I mean. After MIT, I could... work for someone, or something. Build stuff. Like. Equipment or whatever. Maybe."

He'd given this a bit of thought. Shut up.

"Or be a doctor." Technically speaking, also a helpful thing to do.

"Either of those would be awesome. Superheroes get banged up all the time," Billy said. "Look how often people try to kill Tony. It's kind of scary."

"Seriously," Topher agreed. "He basically needs to have a medical team follow him around everywhere." He paused. "That'd be a cool job, actually." Topher. No.

"That would be cool!" And way better than dying, Topher. "Especially 'cause, you know, people don't get medical examinations with...all their clothes on." He blushed bright red, but he couldn't let that idea stay in his head without sharing it.

...

That was a very good point, Billy. A very good point.

"Are you sure you want to stick to the hero thing?" Topher asked, teasingly. "Because I'm sure my hypothetical medical practice could use some extra staff."

Billy pretended to think about it for a moment before laughing. "Yeah, I'm sure. I'll let you have the medical fun."

"Damn," Topher said, feigning disappointment. "Now I'll have to text you the pictures of shirtless Tony instead of you being around to see. It's not the same."

DAMN IT, BILLY.
