Library, Sunday 05/13

Raven knew it was the Earth holiday of Mother's Day, but since her own mother had disappeared and wanted nothing more to do with her, she was doing her best not to think of it. So to distract herself, she was busily consulting a list of best-selling novels she'd gotten off the internet and was making certain the library had copies available of the books it contained. For the moment she was focusing on the young adult section and decidedly ignoring the not-so-young adult best-sellers. 50 Shades of what?

She'll be happy to help.

It had been a week. A full week. And Sholeh hadn't cried or hidden or done anything else silly or embarrassing because she was homesick. That meant she got to go to the library today, it had been the bargain she'd struck with herself that first night in a strange bed.

Act like a grownup for the first week and then you can visit the library.

Funny how the promise of books could work wonders.

"Wooooow," she whispered. "This place is amazing."

Raven looked up from the library computer and smiled at the girl who'd just walked in. "Hello," she said with a friendly smile. "You must be a new student here. I am Raven, and I would be happy to help you find anything for which you might be looking."

"You work here?" Sholeh asked, sounding just the tiniest bit awed. Raven must be a very important person if she got to work at the library. "I'm Sholeh. I was just going to look around, if that's okay. Do I need any kind of special permission or anything? I promise not to touch!"

"It is very nice to meet you, Sholeh," Raven said, remembering how awed she'd been when she'd first arrived in Fandom.

"And of course you may look around all you wish. You may check out as many books as you'd like, and the only areas you cannot go are the office of the librarian" -- she pointed to the office door, and then to Special Collections -- "and Special Collections. You will require the permission of one of your teachers to enter there."

"Ooooh, okay," Sholeh said, looking at both doors in wide-eyed wonder. What could be in those? What must a librarian's office look like? Perhaps even more books?

"Are you the librarian?" she asked. "And are you sure--as many as I like?"

THAT COULDN'T BE POSSIBLE. COULD NOT.

Raven shook her head. "I am only the library aid, not the librarian," she said. "I work here every Sunday. And yes, I do not believe there is a limit on the number of books you may check out, but you must bring them back in two weeks, though you can renew them if no one else is waiting for the book."

"You get them for two whole weeks?" Sholeh was almost dizzy with that kind of liberty. All the books she wanted! For two weeks! And you could keep them for longer if you needed to!

This place was amazing.

"How did you get so lucky to end up working here?" she asked. "Are you related to the librarian or the principal or someone?"

Because, clearly, there had to be a reason that Raven got to enjoy the lofty position of library-aid. Either she was important or knew someone who was. Maybe she'd donated a lot of the books or something?

"Oh, it is nothing like that," Raven said, though she couldn't help but feel a nice little bit of Pride at the other girl being so impressed. "I used to spend a great deal of time in the library because my...because a friend worked here, and when he left I applied for a position of my own. I had feared I was not qualified but apparently the former librarian was satisfied that I could handle the duties. There is a new librarian now, and if there are openings available for more aids he will likely be posting them soon."

"Wait." Sholeh needed a chance to process this information. "You mean anyone can work here?"

No. No way. She must be misunderstanding or something. Or maybe Raven was just really modest and didn't want to brag. Or something. Because, otherwise, it would mean that just anybody could work for the library.

Anyone like...Sholeh.

"I am not entirely certain what criteria the librarian will use to fill any available positions," Raven said, smiling a little more as she picked up on Sholeh's desire, "but if you care for books and will treat them well and keep them organized, then I think he would definitely consider you for the position."

"Me?" Sholeh was so surprised she actually stepped back an inch or two. "You really think I could work here? Me? For real?"

"I can sense your excitement about books," Raven said. "I would think that would be one of the most desired qualities in a library aide. I did not have much experience when I first applied for the position, and it took me a little time to learn how the books are organized here, but I would be happy to teach you should you wish to become an aide." The Dewey Decimal System was a little strange, but it hadn't taken her long to get the hang of it.

"There are usually openings after graduation when students begin to leave the island," she continued encouragingly. "If there are, the librarian will surely post them soon. You should apply."

"You will?" There was more squeaking now, Raven. More of it. "I should? Do you really mean it?"

Both, either, whichever!

Raven thought the squeaking was kind of adorable.

"It would be a shame not to nurture your love of books," she said. "Yes, you should. And if you are given the job, I would truly be pleased to help you."

"Thank you!" Sholeh said, trying unsuccessfully to not do a spontaneous little dance of happiness. "How will I know when the librarian starts looking for helpers?"

She could be a librarian aid. Eeeeeeeeee!

"He will most likely post a notice somewhere all students may see it," Raven said. Given that she hadn't managed a successful conversation yet with the new librarian, she wasn't entirely sure. "And I will certainly tell you if I find out there are openings available. What floor are you living on in the dorm?"

"The second!" Sholeh said, having transmuted the dancing into a subtle little bounce instead. "Room, uhhh...uhhh...can I get back to you on that one? I live with Butters, if that helps."

It had only been a week and she was still learning the ins and outs of phones. Remembering her room number was a challenge for next week.

"I am on the fifth floor, in room 509," Raven said, not certain where Butters lived, either, but it was a small dorm. "Though I am spending much of my time away this summer. But I will be here every Sunday, and should the librarian express his intentions to hire new aides, I will be certain to find you and let you know."

"Thank you!" Sholeh said, giving Raven the brightest smile she'd worn yet. "This is the best day so far!"

Already, she was eagerly turning towards the rows and rows and rows of books that awaited her. Fiction, non-fiction, art, history, music, theory, governance, subjects she didn't even know existed yet...So many books here--more than she could possibly read in her few years here.

She had started to scurry off towards them before she realized it. Flushing, she stopped and looked back over to Raven. "Thank you so much!" she said, bobbing a quick curtsy. "You've been the most helpful ever!"

She certainly could have stayed and talked to Raven a bit longer, but for now the stacks were beckoning. Don't worry, Raven. She'd be back.
